Was out metal detecting finding some goodies

Post by Handloader » Mon Aug 12, 2024 3:07 pm

Was hunting around an old barn circa 1900 and was finding a lot of trash and just junk. Then I hit a high tone about 8 inches deep, as I was removing the soil I saw a glass bottle. Thinking to myself there must be some metal under it. To my surprise I picked up the bottle and it was full of buffalo nickels. I took everything home cleaned with water and then put in my ultrasonic cleaner with just distilled water and dawn. The dates vary from 1930 to 1937 all cleaned up very well.

That's a very cool discovery, Handloader. And that "Safe Milk for Babies" bottle is a great bonus! Thanks for sharing the story with us.

Very cool find!
That's one of the best treasures I've ever seen, and the bottle is still intact!
I wonder what the story was that led to that being buried.

Makes me want to go out and buy a metal detector. That's amazing.

Great find. If you don't already have a nickel collectors book (the one where you insert the coins above the dates) you may want to get one. Also as you probably already know there are 3 different mints. No Mark, Philly, "D" Denver and "S" San Francisco.

I was just watching a video on magnet fishing. They found some cool stuff but not as cool as your milk jug and nickels.

Very cool indeed. Unbroken bottle is a nice plus as the others have said.

Cool find, I actually used mine on the weekend to find a 30" chainsaw chain I had sat down last week and lost.
Had already dragged a rake through all the sawdust trying to find it without any success, detector found it straight up under about 4" of sawdust.
Have never really found much of any interest with it, probably about $10 worth of coins but used it once before to locate a trap I had set as a hay set and then had cattle get in the paddock and spread a bale of hay over about 10square yards.
I did get all excited once detecting some of the old mullock heaps from 1800's gold mining, how a spark plug got into one and buried under 12" soil and rock I dont know.

There is a spot down on the lower areas of my property that has a trail that people referred to as "the old carriage road", and it's just an overgrown trail now. I was walking the property line in that area a couple years back putting up new posted signs, and came across a circular arrangement of rocks about 4 feet in diameter. Clearly man made, and sure looked to me to have been a well of some sort. It was filled in, but that area would have water within a couple feet if someone dug down there. I still go look at that when I'm down in that area, and it still sparks my imagination. There must have been houses or cabins or something down there, why else would there be a well? I have one of those Harbour Freight metal detectors, and that is a place that I'd love to search around with that someday.
