My Dad had a VW bug in the 1960s. They all looked the same for years, didn't they? He would have never believed the asking price as listed for this 1964 beetle in the "Car & Driver" article:

My 2013 VW Beetle Turbo is the third generation model. As recently reported, 2018 is the last year the VW Beetle will be produced. Its looks sure has changed over the last 49 years.

This is the mint condition Bug discussed in the "Car & Driver" article. This 2013 Turbo is my current car.

My first car was a VW Bug, pretty sure it was a '64. It was in decent shape, bought it in 1970 for $400.

Friend of mine in high school had one. Was good for getting from point a to b or anywhere else on .25 worth of gas. For years the only place the original body style was still being made was Mexico for Mexico sales. Then in early 2000's Mexico stopped making them too.

I got over 40 mpg in mine and back then gas was around $.30 a gallon so you could cruise the Ave. all Fri. & Sat. night for less than a buck but if you were on the highway and wanted to pass someone going too slow you'd better have a very long straight stretch.

I cannot recall the year of my Dad's oldest VW. But he had one that didn't have the in-dash gas gauge. I got caught a couple of times at the side of the road, out of gas. "Someone" had forgotten to turn the floor lever back for the 1-gallon reserve tank! Those older Bugs in their challenging simplicity were fun to drive.
