2017 Subaru Outback Transmission Failure

Well you might want to leave the fish bowl at home once in a while. Ford uses a fuel injection system that is prone to carbon build up in the valve train. You might want to drop her to the floor once in a while.

How many miles did you put on it? Any breakdowns.

Never had any problems with it. Only had 37000 when I sold it. Neighbor has one same year he has about 70k on his. Only issues he has had is a control that has to do with the heater and he has a cam sensor that is bad.

Gene, I have the same engine in my F150. It gets about 20+ on the way to and from camp. From the house to work in the city or village, I get about 19 to 19.5.
I do let it's hair down when passing in the Adirondacks. I like to get by as fast as possible. Boy will it do it. I'm usually at 85+ when I pass the 55 or less vehicle. I just let it coast back to normal. It really moves out.

Dave I generally go way above the speed limit to pass if needed too. But more often than not someone is passing me. I had my Outback up to 100 mph for about a quarter mile once. I had a Crown Victoria that would cruise at 90 all day long across Montana.

Now that I’m tired I’m seldom in a hurry. Last Friday going to Milwaukee I drove 55 in a 70 till traffic was heavy enough that I stepped it up to 65. I don’t like to drive fast anymore but I also don’t like to hold up traffic. When I bought the van I went through Chicago during rush hour and was doing 75 in the slow lane.

Here in rural Wisconsin the speed limit is 55 and that is fine with me.

My Outback transmission is failing again at 88K miles. At least everything is free because Subaru extended the warranty on the transmission to 10 years or 100K miles

With the Subaru it was just a poor design. After 2019 they are okay.

I had FIVE Subies. Got the first 4wd Wagon in Hawaii... in the early 80s. It had a Manual shift for the 4wd H/L and we loved it, would go anywhere.

Great little car, and we put a LOT of miles on it, with very little other than the standard preventive maintenance.
Drove it on the beaches of NC in the off season, with a permit. Something like September to April or May. Nice.

The second I bought because the first had high mileage and I had orders to California. They offered me a GREAT deal on the second one because of the color, it was BUTT Ugly.

The Third was a GL10 Lux wagon, and it was okay, but I was NOT in love with it. Turbo... not 4wd. The EX loved it and wanted the Luxury Wagon for her and the kids. Okay then. When we divorced after I left the Marine Corps, I let her take the car so she would have a safe reliable vehicle for the kids. It was paid for. She didn't do the maintenance, oil changes. Turbo blew... less than 10,000 miles on the car.

Miss T and I bought a nice Forester, and put 240,000 miles on it. When we traded it in for a large truck to pull the kayak trailer for the charity, it still looked new. They sold the car off the dealer's lot while we were still finishing our paperwork on the new truck. Ran into the guy a year later, and he told us he still loved the car.

We only kept the fifth Subie for about three months. They had changed them. Smaller cabin, cheaper seats. Trying to push buyers into the outbacks. Traded it back in for a Frontier. We are truck people.

I guess I'm just old fashioned. I have worked on my own cars off and on all my life, so I have a sense of the cost of various parts. Yes, I know about inflation and all that. Things certainly aren't what they used to be...BUT, $10,635.95 for a transmission of any kind is BEYOND ridiculous!

I just won the lottery too. Vortex replaced that 2.5 - 10 Viper Gen 1 scope I had on my AR10 308 with the Gen II version when they couldn't repair it. They even paid shipping both ways. A winner. I got the AR shooting now... $1200 scope cost me nothing.

I just won the lottery too. Vortex replaced that 2.5 - 10 Viper Gen 1 scope I had on my AR10 308 with the Gen II version when they couldn't repair it. They even paid shipping both ways. A winner. I got the AR shooting now... $1200 scope cost me nothing.

That is one of the things I like about Vortex - the customer service.

Especially for a 9 year old car. From what I’ve read because of all the failures the replacements are getting scarce. And if they claim it costs $10K to repair that’s what they get to write off.
