We spent the week (M-F) at one of our favorite places to go camping. This is Sullivan Lake in the NE corner of the state and in one of the most beautiful places in the area. The campground is a Federal facility maintained by the National Forest Service and is really nice. The sites are very spread out and some spots like the one we always use are completely private. We can sit in our chairs and not see any other campers and can only hear them faintly. There is a dirt airstrip not far far from our site and we enjoyed a Huey doing some touch and gos on it. On one approach the pilot kept it in a hover about six feet above the ground and did a pivot. Really fun and interesting to watch. We did some casual fishing but had no success. This lake contains record German Brown trout, West Slope Cutthroat trout, Kokanee and Burbot (Ling Cod). It’s over 300 ft deep and is best fished by trolling. Our boat is not set up for trolling yet so we tried some casting and some still fishing to no avail.
All in all we had a great time with lots of relaxing, great boating, fishing and with no cell service no internet or phones. (We have a satellite radio so we do keep up with the news which this week was very disturbing). No hookups so we run on battery and propane. There are vault toilets and water spigots but that’s it. I use a small Honda generator to keep the batteries charged running it a couple of hours each morning. With the water available I can fill a jug and add it to the tank if we get low.
Here’s out campsite with a second pic showing just how spaced out the sites are.
This is what is called Hall Mountain where a nice herd of Big Horn sheep live. Many years ago I was up there and got some great pics but that was then.
The area in the distance is where I used to hunt Elk. It’s big country and very steep and heavy cover. It’s a very small Elk herd up here but if you see a bull there’s a good chance it will be a mature one.
Couple shots of the Huey.
Spring has sprung. Get out and shoot your Henry

I’ve camped there many times. One time a bear came through and ripped up my tent. Glad I wasn’t in it at the time.

That’s just a little too close for comfort. As Gene knows, this area is a Grizzly Bear recovery zone. Unlikely a Grizzly would come down as low as the campground is but as mentioned Black Bears can be aggressive too. The camp sites have steel bear boxes in them for food storage. Having a trailer I don’t need the bear box but I do put my portable grill in it at night.
