AP Products Tank Check LP with Monitor Kit

Post by JEBar » Thu Dec 10, 2020 8:06 pm

many times we've wondered with our camper; as well as, with our home propane smoker, grills and such how much propane is left in the tank we were using .... comments and use observations from anyone using these electronic Gas Level Indicators would be appreciated .... I like the theory .... there are several YouTube videos available ... all second generation ones that I've see have been favorable ....

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Weight the tank. It’s the best way.

we have 40 lb tanks ... I make it a practice to not take them out of the camper any more often than I have to ;)

I have that on my Wish List, but it is the single sensor, with no UGLY display. You don’t need it anyway, install one sensor under your backup bottle, use the phone app twice weekly to check the level. The regulator will switch over when the first bottle is empty, and then you can keep track of the standby one as it gets used up. When it gets to 25%, refill both of them. There is no reason at all to monitor both bottles. Weighing works perfectly at home, but it is a PITA when you are traveling and you have to carry a scale. And those bottles are heavy. Mine are 30 pounders.

You will probably need a couple of these spacer rings - one to make room for the sensor, the second so the tanks are the same height.

Why are RV displays so hideous, it does not take a genius to design a nice looking one that will blend in with stuff.

I forgot this, it updates every five seconds, which is insane, it just burns up the sensor battery. They need to make it every ten or twenty minutes. The only portable propane device I know of that uses that much gas is a 400,000 btu weed burner. If you buy one, complain to the manufacturer about this.

Battery life should be good for a single camping season. The reviews are wildly variable, I think it would make sense to change it out when you prepare for your first trip, don’t expect an installed one to sit all winter and still be OK... If you are a full timer, then maybe every six months. A lot depends on the batteries you buy, it uses a CR 2032 button cell, there are a lot of really crummy batteries, including counterfeit name brand ones. I have a six pack of junk Energizer lithiums with a 2027 expiration date that last exactly a month in my garage door opener. Normally I would change them every couple of years. Buy name brand cells at a local reputable drug store, or an online electronics retailer, or Batteries Plus Bulbs, not eBay or Amazon, they are awash with fake everything.

These are the fakes I got from Amazon:
