over time I've been out in hail storms but when it comes to being beaten, none come anywhere near in comparison to yesterday

The worst hail storm I was in was when I was a kid. I know I was fairly young. The family went to Sam's Cafe on the Sarcoxie (Missouri) square for an evening meal. We didn't go out to eat much when I was a kid because money seemed to be always just a little too tight, but that's a whole other story. Dad paid the for the meal and we were just about to leave when a storm came through. Dad was impatient to get going, but I don't know why. He shouted, "Run to the car!" He had a 57 Chevy that was yellow. We called it "ole yeller". Anyway, we got pelted like no tomorrow hustling to the car. I don't know why he didn't want to wait for it to pass and I never asked. I still remember feeling those golf ball size hail stones bouncing off my noggin'.

well our summer in Estelline has taken a couple of major turns .... first, our serious drought has (at least temporarily) come to an end ..... we've had just under 4" of rain in the last two days .... more is predicted to be on the way tonight .... second, all three of our children and their families have left for home .... our youngest son left yesterday morning, drove straight through and arrived back home in NC less than 24 hours later .... my wife and I have made that same drive something over 45 times and he beat our best time by several hours .... our daughter's final flight is in the air and should arrive back home within a couple of hours .... its sure quiet around here right now .... Maureen's new pup seems somewhat lost with out all the kids around to play with her

Some sad news today. Oscar-nominated actor and Texan Frederic Forrest has passed away at the age of 86. Frederic was born in Waxahachie and is probably best known to Texans for playing the role of Blue Duck in Lonesome Dove. Forrest first came to public attention for his performance in When the Legends Die (1972), which earned him a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer. He went on to receive Academy and Golden Globe Award nominations in the Best Supporting Actor category for his portrayal of Huston Dyer in musical drama The Rose (1979).
Forrest portrayed Jay "Chef" Hicks in Francis Ford Coppola's epic war film Apocalypse Now (1979), and collaborated with Coppola on four other films: The Conversation (1974), One from the Heart (1982), Hammett (1982), and Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988). His other credits include The Missouri Breaks (1976), The Two Jakes (1990), and Falling Down (1993), along with the television series 21 Jump Street, Die Kinder and, of course, Lonesome Dove.

yesterday we attended one of my favorite events .... that being a draft horse pull at the Estelline Rodeo Grounds .... all of the horses there were Belgians .... talk about impressive, one of the winning team weighed just over 2,500 pounds .... even the concession stand was impressive, it is a handmade horse drawn wagon .... the sled they pull weighs 2,000 lbs ... each of the concrete weights weighs 500 lbs .... the winning team weighed 9,000 lbs

its been a beautiful morning in east central South Dakota .... a few high clouds, gentle breeze, 83 with a RealFeel of 93 .... contrast that with being under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch, 94 with a RealFeel of 114 .... yep happy to be in SD .... not much on tap for this coming week .... do have an appointment with a Vet to give Maureen' pup a Parvo shot .... some of the family driving to Florida for a week for a vacation plus giving their son a chance to attend a football camp ....

it was a dark and stormy night followed by a dark and stormy morning .... around 2AM major lightening could be seen south of us ..... the storm arrived here around 3:15 .... a second band moved in around 5:30 and really revved about an hour later .... still dark and gloomy at 8:30 with a small patch of blue sky in the far west ... no serious plans for today and according the the forecast that's a good thing .... this is Maureen's new pup's first experience with strong lightening and thunder .... so far, she's handling it well
