Shooter's Pro Shop

Post by JEBar » Fri Apr 17, 2020 12:07 am

I just received a notice from SPS that they have some new Nosler overruns .... one that is of a particular interest to me is a Nosler 30 caliber (.308) 110 E-Tip .... for those who may not be aware, their E-Tips are lead free, deep penetrating, extremely efficient bullets .... this is the first time I've seen 110 grain'ers .... don't know if I'll ever get the chance to do some long range varmint hunting but if I do, this is the bullet I'd build my ammo around .... out of our 308, 30-06, or 300 WBY, it ought to be one heck of a flat shooter .... they have priced it at $14.95 for a box of 50 .... not knowing if / when I might see them again, I ordered 5 boxes .... per their website, as of right now, they only have 6 boxes left

Very cool bullet for the 30-30 single shot.

Edit,
Would be a great varminter out of a 308, or the others.
Being lead free it is maybe to long for the 30-30.

I had the same thought .... I sure wish Henry would add a 30-30 to its Long Ranger line

Probably didn't (and probably won't) due to the fact they would be up against literally millions of 'alternative' .30-30s - Original WInchesters, Marlins and all the other names chambered in .30-30.

Far too many choices (and many better than the Long Ranger) to compete with.

Probably why the BLR was never chambered in .30-30.

.
... I agree not likely. Aside from the broader competition, Henry offers both mag tube, side-gate and single shot versions (7 of them) in .30-30. I don't see Henry adding another to compete with their own other offering.

I doubt that they will introduce a 30-30 Long Ranger but have no doubt that if they did, it would find a large market .... given that for decades 30-30 was in the top 3 sellers for RCBS dies .... in the last couple of years it has fallen a bit but is still in the top 10 .... the Long Ranger's magazine feed would allow the use of highly aerodynamic bullets that would open up new worlds that are closed to rifles with tube magazines .... Henry isn't interested in reloads or reloaders for that matter .... there official position is, only factory ammo should be used in their rifles .... with that being the case about all I can do is hope

Not necessarily closed - just turns these rifles into single shots!

One of the obvious reasons for Henry to 'clone' the BLR was to create a lever action rifle that would accommodate rimless cartridges that have higher performance than the .30-30.

The internal design of the Long Ranger is also similar to that of bolt action rifles in that the rounds headspace on the shoulder as opposed to the rim such as with a typical .30-30.

Chambering a Long Ranger in .30-30 would require a dramatic change in design because of the rimmed cartridge as well as an extractor and ejector designed for a rimmed cartridge and I don't see Henry giving this any consideration.

Bottom line is anyone wanting a .30-30 lever action would be well served by finding a good 'traditional' rifle such as a Winchester or Marlin. The quality of early models of these rifles are typically excellent with smooth actions and very good accuracy.

The internals on My 1899 Winchester are literally incredible with machining sharpness beyond compare and an incredibly smooth action.

Lightweight .30 caliber bullets (in any configuration) seem to always be in short supply but now it's really bad.

I was lucky to find one box of 110 gr JRN a couple weeks ago and I am waiting for a notification from Xtreme on when they will have the same bullet in plated, bulk - as I am going to order a 500 round box of them.

Another favorite of mine is the Speer 110 grain 'Varminter' but they are unobtainium as well.

No matter however for my shooting needs the cheaper, plated bulk bullets are fine!
