Need new mower

Post by Greyhawk » Thu Mar 21, 2019 8:57 pm

Well.. my riding mower died last year and the grass is gonna start growing soon. So, I'm looking for a new mower.
Thinking of a zero turn... No larger than a 52" deck.... Been looking at Gravely's, Toro's, and Cub Cadets... Anyone have something that they really like? My yard is about 2 acres and I mow about 5 acres out at my 40.. Summer is coming!!!! :D

our oldest son mows about 20 acres .... prior to buying a mower he did a great deal of research .... he settled on a Grasshopper brand mower ===> https://www.grasshoppermower.com/ .... with it he can mow his acreage if a fraction of the time it takes with our John Deere 4300 with its 5' mower deck .... I use a Cub Cadet tractor style to cut our 2+ acres .... its a dependable mower that works for me but its nowhere near the class of a Grasshopper

My yard does not justify any more than a push. Wish I had as much land to take care of, so I am in no position to make a recommendation. Just get the one that gets it done the fastest...more time to shoot then.

That's right. And the 'D' means diesel. Who else has a riding diesel lawn tractor? Diesel up on Monday and ride all week!

Thanks for the input everyone.. My dad is a big Deere fan.. In fact he had a Ford 8N that he painted green and yellow and put Deere decals on!
I think I am leaning toward a cub cadet Ultima ZT2. I like the grasshopper but its a little out of my price range. Plus, I want to buy from a dealer who services them, and there is a Cub Cadet dealer close by.
The scabbards are a must though!!!

Your decision makes a lot of sense. Cub Cadet, from all I've heard are great machines!...and yes...even better with the scabbard...
 good luck with your purchase whichever it is!

Cub Cadet snowblower seems good too. Try either.

Go with whatever the best dealer you have around that you like sells. The relationship with the dealer is key. Good service, perhaps free pick up and delivery, priority repair service. All of those things matter. If the Cub Cadet dealer is tops in your area, that's probably the one to go with.

My parents had about 5-7 acres of lawn that I mowed at one time in the farms "heyday". I always had a spare in case the main machine had a breakdown. With a couple of acres, you might want to pick up a used garden tractor just in case. Look on Craigslist.

I’ve been thrashing along with my $150 Deere John for four seasons now. It almost ended up on the scrap run last time, but then I looked at the cost of replacements. I’m waiting on a new coil and plugs to show up as it has no spark at the moment. If it starts, I’ll keep running it. If it doesn’t, I’m going to go look at a used Deere I found locally. I think it’s over priced, but it’s the best deal I’ve found so far.

Grasshoppers are very pricey. I have wanted one for years. Finally broke down and bought a new one last year (52" cut). I have not regretted buying it, just wish I had bit the bullet a few years ago. Just didn't think I could justify spending that much in previous years. Hope this one lasts a long time - I am spoiled now and would have to have another.
