Second season for the recycled raised bed

Post by daytime dave » Sun May 13, 2018 12:54 am

The second season has started in my recycled raised bed.

Lettuce is growing on the bottom left and radishes on the top left.

Day Time, I hope that you didn't use Pressure treated lumber, that stuff has arsnic and some other nasty chemicals. Maybe next time, you can build with Trex recycled material. Just saying.

Thanks for the concern MuddyWaters62, This was made with plain pallet wood that was not treated with anything. The entire structure, down to the screws and bolts, was recycled from the addition project where I work. No particle wood or any other harmful materials (that I'm aware of). It has a shelf life as a result. Dad had several raised beds that are also made of plain wood. A few are showing signs of needing a bit of repair.

Good News Dave. My monitor showed a greenish tint to the wood. Carry on.

Ha, I see what it was. That was residue left over from season 1. Some weeds got scraped against the wood I think when I changed out some of the soil. Good eyes. It's getting watered today with the rain.

Looks good Dave. The wife and I have tried growing tomatoes here in SW FL but the bugs eat better than we do. We even tried plants on the screened lanai and the tomatoe bugs got to them. We used to grow tomatoes in RI (2 decades ago when we lived there) and it was simple. We planted small plants in the garden and added some manure. Got great tasting tomatoes. At the end of the year we roto tilled the dead plants and left over rotted tomatoes into the ground with a little chicken manure and lush tomatoe plants grew back every year. Here the only luck we have had is with lemon trees. We get lemons with so much juice in them it is insane.

Although these are not in the raised bed, they are getting ripe.
