Rollup Garden Hose

For once I did something besides work on my shop/garage. Today I bought and installed a rollup garden hose reel. The hose is 130’ so will reach most anywhere I want to water. The downside is it’s only 1/2” so it’s low volume.

The post is left over from the 500 gallon propane tank that was removed. It’s 6”x8” x8’ and sunk 3’ into 300 pounds of concrete. It’s not going anywhere soon.

We've owned similar in the distant past and I never really liked them because they leaked and/or the retractor never lasted. Well, this summer my wife decided she had to have one. We bought one from "Hoselink". Had it about 3 months now. It came with a nozzle and a couple of quick link adapters, 82 ft 9/16 inch hose. We get a lot of volume out of the hose, but then our water pressure off the well runs 50-85psi. I mounted ours on a 6ft 1 inch pipe driven 3ft into the ground. The hose reel at the back has a 1" pin and mounted on the pipe the reel can swivel 360. The post mount that came with the reel I'll mount on the wall in shop somewhere for storing the reel in the winter. Hopefully, this one will last. So far no leaks. Not sure the retractor is going to hold up. Doesn't 'feel' any different than those that failed in years past.

I’ve read that a lot of them leak and don’t wind up. I bought this one on Amazon and it had good reviews for lasting. The biggest drawback from the reviews was volume. They do make the same model with 5/8” but it’s on 85 feet long. I need length over pressure. My well pressure isn’t very high but it will draw water all day & night.

Both setups sound great, I’m still one of those the coil it up on the ground guys.I have some bushes I water that are several hundred feet from the hose bib so I have some hose “permanently” laid out in the brush to get water back there. Is sure would be nice to have a hose on a reel instead so I’m going to take a look at your setups.

I’ve used the hand crank ones with great success although they take a lot of muscle. Having “pulled hose” a lot you know that it can be quite a workout. These coil ones are much easier although you still have to be the muscle. Mine is not going to coil 130’ of hose. At best they pull 20’. They work the best long term if you pull with a rag in your hand wiping the debris off as you coil.

I'm more of a leave it lay where I last used it or yank it out of the way and leave it in a wad somewhere kinda guy. And that is where my wife stepped in. Hence the Hoselink. If this one works out I can see more of them in our future. Years ago I had trenched and run 1" irrigation tubing to distant parts of the property. I suspect each standpipe bib might end up with a reel on it.

The Hoselink will pull about 60ft of the 82 ft of hose on dry ground. It'll pull all 82ft if the grass is wet. And yes a rag or cloth glove is necessary to wipe the crud off as the hose retracts through your hand(s).

I have to keep my garden hoses in hose reels. Or the psycho squirrels will chew on them. I had one fairly expensive 100 ft hose converted to a sprinkler hose by the little bush tailed tree rats. So I either have to hand crank them into a reel or hand roll them and put them in the shed. Of course the little monsters still chew on the plastic frame of the reel boxes. Just to let me know that they are watching for me to forget to reel that hose in just once.
They even chew on the plastic faux shutters on the house. I do thin out the tree rat population with a well placed pellet when I get the chance.
