How much gravel do I need?

I posted a thread a couple weeks ago where I thought I was being shot at. Okay, I was, but the weed eater Tina was running threw a piece of gravel and shot out the full view storm door. Took years off my life I could ill afford to lose and nearly ruined my favorite shorts.

Yup, contain that gravel. Glass is expensive, so is siding on the house, and so are automotive body panels. I too have to compliment you Sir, you did a great job on the work so far... Looks professional.

Thanks Al I did do a great job. I’m glad I don’t have to pay myself by the hour because it took me three times as long as it should have taken. I now have 52 hours on the tractor and just completed the first 50 hour service. Next service is at 300 hours except the daily greasing.

I received 16 yards this morning in the pouring rain. We received about an inch and a half in an hour. The truck was right at 73K pounds. It had five axles counting the steer.

This will be the first of three loads.

I’m sure glad I bought the tractor. That hand raking is hard work.

Hand raking gravel will break your back! Glad you got that tractor Gene! Should make relatively quick work of it. ☺

Yep, dump the bucket as you back up then back drag that dump with the bottom of the bucket. You’ll be done in no time.

That gets me halfway done. Then I have to backup and use the rear plow. I make several passes then lower it an inch and several more passes and keep repeating the process till it’s level.

Tina ran a landscape crew crew for a major company in the metro area in Richmond for seven years. I watched her spread a 13 ton pile of gravel right quick, and never pick up a bucket. She pulled it with the back of the bottom edge of the bucket, then began smoothing with the lip tipped up and the bucket in float mode.

She only picked up buckets of gravel when we were filling the french drain around the woodshop to prevent future flooding. I had started to spread the gravel bucket by bucket and I got the look.

My tractor is a tad small for this project. When I’m done with it, the berm and the backyard campground it will be the perfect size.

I can see a "land plane" for a compact tractor in your future. They are great for maintaining gravel drives and filling potholes. Most are reasonably priced.
I really like the unique legs on your picnic table.

I spread out most of my gravel. I need to finish removing dirt/clay in the backyard for my camping area before I can spread the remaining gravel there.

I don’t have the standing water on the concrete like I did and the gravel area seems to be draining too.

I wanted 5/8 minus however all they had was 1”. It will move around more till it’s run over a hundred times.

My turn around is complete and I sprayed a DMZ between the grass and gravel so I don’t hit gravel with the mower.

I commented on the video earlier, but watched it again. If I was still living in Cumberland, with 300 yards of gravel to deal with, I'd think seriously about a land plane. As for your wish... ... we have some property and a Kubota, and Miss T loves the tractor. We set up a package before we left VA and they had it pretty much ready when we arrived in Oklahoma. I did quite a bit of research and listed to the First Rule... don't buy TOO Small a tractor, but don't buy MORE tractor than you need. We bought the L250l. It does 98% of what we ever need to do. If we need a bigger tractor, the neighbor has THREE tractors and is a really nice guy. I help him out in other ways, he drives his big tractor down. We have needed it ONCE so far, for 30 minutes.

We bought the implements we needed and you'll be amazed at what you can use them for. I added pallet forks to the list and Miss T rolled her eyes. I knew I wanted them to use for my Berm Wall for the pistol range. She has used them a lot, for all kinds of jobs. Never regretted the purchase once since she found out how useful they are. Moves the water troughs, brush piles, logs, rolls of rubber matting, Pallets of grain or hay (imagine that, pallets with pallet forks.).. and even lockers and tool bins from one barn to another. Much easier than the bucket.

Her Therapy? Bush hogging the fields.
