She made that look easy, but it is WORK. When we first bought our place here I did not yet own a tractor/mower. We had a 1/2 acre of wild hay. I thought, rather than buy a tractor/mower, it would be less expensive to mow with a scythe being a small area. I have a nice scythe and a tractor/mower.GunnyGene wrote: ↑Sun May 18, 2025 10:38 amBe happy you don't have to do that job the way it was done 125 years ago.

I'd bet her core and abdominals are impressive.
You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.
I don't look back at the things I can't do anymore with regret, I just look forward to the things I still can.

Did that scythe come with a bagger?
Re: You Can't Win These Days
Can't even imagine doing something like that all day even when I was young and healthy. I worked in fruit orchards for a few years in my 20's and it was hard work but nothing like that.GunnyGene wrote: ↑Sun May 18, 2025 10:38 amBe happy you don't have to do that job the way it was done 125 years ago.

My mom was the youngest of a large farm family in ND, born in 1911 so probably started helping with the cooking before 1920. She used to tell me how much her brothers would eat for breakfast and supper (what we call lunch). She said you wouldn't believe the quantity of food it took for them to do the amount of hard manual labor they had to do during the growing season. Dinner was just a light meal as they went to bed very early to get up with the sunrise and do it all over again.
I remember when we had family taco dinners her 3 brothers that lived close by and no longer did farm work would compete to see who could eat the most tacos.

I didn't read most of the replies, but I mow the fields with a Bush Hog. I have it set as reasonably low as it can go and it looks just fine when I'm done.
About to mow them for the first time this season, next week-end.

We are just going to go with the bush hog... It looks fine with the new blades.

My father had three or four scythes from my grandparents farm. I got pretty good with them at one time. I should have kept the one I liked the best, but..................
