Garden progression

Did take a picture this morning of how many left to shell.

Picked most likely the last of the peas this afternoon. None to soon for this ol back of mine. Should be about 5 more bags. 5 bags would make a total of 40 bags froze.

Ended up with 39 bags of peas. Cut them down today and hopefully till them in tomorrow. Usually I plant a 2nd crop but not able to this time. Dr. Orders. Meantime here’s few tomatoes. Had to rotate picture to post.

Got the peas tilled in. Feel kinda lost not planting a second crop this time. Guess I’ll do what the doc and wife suggests. Only thing left is the tomatoes and Okra.

I may have told y’all a story on that last post about not planting a late crop. My wife is kinda agreeing to me planting, but only 2, maybe 3 rows. Won’t plant until close to end of this month, so plans could get changed again.

Nice looking tomatoes. With our cool Spring and Summer so far our tomatoes are nowhere near ready to pick. Temps are finally into the 90's so we may finally get some.

Thanks. It’s just the opposite here. Usually by now the heat has done the tomatoes in.

Only thing left in garden is a few hills of okra.

Garden is done for this year. Not planting a late crop. Pulled up the okra today.

Did you just get tired of the okra? ours usually produces til the first frost, or
like you just give up on it.

RP. We still had bags in the freezer and put up some more. I just planted that short row to have some fresh to eat, then give to folks. I’ve always had big gardens and plenty to give away. But things have changed. The younger folks don’t want fresh vegetables out of garden. I had a woman earlier I asked if she wanted any peas. She asked were they already shelled. I said no. I’ll pick and bring them to you. She said she didn’t want them if she had to shell them. I better stop rambling on here, and just say I got discouraged and pulled them up.

I don't blame you. People are funny like that. My dad always planted a huge garden. Everyone enjoyed and raved about the vegetables when my mother would bring them to folks at work. Not one came out to pick their own even though they were always invited to do so. I remember her telling me this as arthritis started to slow her down.
I find the same to be true. I have two sister in laws that will come pick their own. They are the only one's I ask anymore to come out and help themselves.

I tell people I have a ten weed minimum for visitors but no one listens to me.

Arthritis is one of the things slowing me down. I been downsizing last several years and I know my gardening days are winding down. I love my peas and butterbeans and nobody around gardens anymore. I can find butterbeans in grocery store that's edible, but I haven't found any peas I like. May have to settle with a couple or so tomato and pepper plants.

I used to get small cans of petit poi peas that were very good but don't see them in stores around here anymore.

Got the bush hogging done earlier this week, got the garden limed and tilled today. Should be good til spring.

Still have plenty of tomatoes and bell peppers not yet ripe. I am going to wait and see how they fair until the hard frosts. Then I will mulch up maple leaves and till them in.
