This may have been posted before but it did not turn up in a Search. A typical .357 Mag rifle is about 5 foot pounds, a .44 Mag is about 11, a .45/70 is 18 to 38. Ouch..... in contrast a .22LR is 0.2 ft lbs.and scrolling all the way to the bottom, the 600 Nitro Express (in a 12 pound rifle) is 154.

I have had a couple of .45/70 rifles and really enjoyed shooting light Trapdoor loads. The bear rounds, not so much. Well, actually, not at all.

Does anyone know how the HSM .44 Mag 305 Bear Loads would rate out of a Big Boy X? Comparable to the low end .45/70?

we have both a Henry 44 Mag and 45-70 .... the lightest recoil from a Cowboy Action level load fired in our 45-70 kicks noticeably harder than a full power hunting load out of our 44 Mag

Thanks, that is good to know. I had a JM Marlin 1895 STP (Trapper 16 inch) and, while a lovely, handy carbine, it just hurt me too much.

I want an 'all day' shooter - not that I am going to be shooting it non-stop all day but I want something I can pick up shoot a bit, and return to later with no hesitation.

Probably one of the reasons I decided against a Sharps rifle in .45-70.

Technique matters. The technique ( for the really big bores), is to convince somebody else to shoot the thing and make him/her look forward to the experience.

I actually dont mind shooting my 45-70's but Im not shooting bear loads in them when Im target shooting.

I don't mind the 45-70 either... That being said, I did put a different recoil pad on my Marlin (it had the old, hard rubber pad, and it was very uncomfortable to shoot even mid-range loads) If you are pretty committed to shooting .44 mag bear loads and you find them uncomfortable, a different recoil pad might make a big difference. I think that the pad that I put on my Marlin was made by Limbsaver and it really did the trick.

Back in the day when I had my Marlin 45-70 I put a LImbsaver slip on recoil pad on it. I didn’t shoot Buffalo Bore or similar loads in it but factory 405’s and my reloads were fine. I still have the pad and you are welcome to try it out when you get your .44.

As you said, my old Marlin 44 mag rifle did have some kick to it. I shot my hot hand loads in it and you knew you were shooting. Not at all like my old .357, no more than a popcorn fart!

I sure am glad I didn't start off with the 45-70 because I was certainly considering it. In my younger days recoil was no big deal but my how things have changed. Not having fired a rifle in about 20 years (except .22lr), I decided to give my new BBS .44 Carbine a run on 4th of July. I had a blast but I have been feeling it since.

The older I get the less I like heavy recoiling rifles. My 338 mags have long been gone and my 45-70 has seen less bench time and even my 44 mag Henry with my cast bullet hunting loads can be painful and cause a mental effect at the bench. I am finding that I really enjoy my 45 Colt much more these days even if t is a Remlin. I don't need anymore nerve damage.

About 50 ft lbs. Ouch. I went from a pump 12 gauge, to a pump 12 gauge with a recoil absorbing stock, to a semi- auto 12 gauge, to no 12 gauge at all. ..... Those Brenneke Black Magic 3” bear loads really hurt.
