I thought I would ask here of those that have a 1860 Henry, how many had to file on the front sight? I am finally getting out tomorrow to see how mine shoots and would like to know if a file is needed or would it mess up the long range adjustable sight. I am also taking my new 45/70 to sight in. I am hoping that it doesn't take to much bench work. Thanks for any advice.

Technically you shouldn't have to file a front sight at all if you have an adjustable rear AND the front sight that was installed had been calculated properly based on rear sight height and distance from the front.
Unfortunately there are some cases of incorrect front sights being installed at the factory but
Best to just start at 50 yards and see where you are to begin with.

I hope you take some pictures. I dont remember the 45-70 you got whether it was the CCH or the all weather. But my CCH wasnt near as finicky about loads as the all weather was. Let us know.

BigAl I bought the 45-70 in brass. I guess I am a gluten for punishment. I plan on giving my BBB45mag to my sun, he just doesn't know it yet. I have to say that after luging my longrifles around for over 40 years these Henrys are not heavy at all.

Ouch I hope you take your shoulder pad with you to shoot that one off the bench. They look real nice I do like the looks of the brass 45-70 but my shoulder sure did enjoy that pad on the CCH model. But I like the CCH look to so it was a win win for me. Al

I didn't look up your .45-70 when you first posted about buying it, but I did this morning. Gorgeous Henry! The longer wood forearm and big loop lever alongside the brass, balances out the proportions of the rifle. I also like that it comes from the factory with swivel studs.

Back from shooting. First I can't say enough about the 1860,it was right on the money out of the box. 50 yards off the bench, looks good to me. also here is a pick of both rifles. Between my son and I we went through 50 rounds with the 1860,
The 45-70 was a different story. We did go through a box of shells but that was only 20 rounds. I have it shooting about 1.5 inches high at 50 yards. That was all the shooting we needed for that one. All and all a great outing.
