Rust...

Anyone else having trouble with rust on the inside and edges of your levers? I'm noticing it on my BBS and I had the same issue with my H001 until I took it off and had it duracoated. It would probably help if I was more diligent in wiping it down after I use it, but I've never had a problem with any of the other brands of lever actions I own.

after use we wipe ours down with Ballistol .... no such problem with any of our 3 Henry rifles

I'm sure that's the cure, but I use it a lot, and I've been accused of being absent-minded once or twice.

I have a couple of large loop levers that were comped to me by Henry. Both have issues with the finish flaking off and rusting. I figure I'll just blue them properly when I get around to it. in the meantime I keep them oiled or waxed.

My BBS has the large loop. I'm thinking it's going for a duracoat job, too. No more worries after that.

I lived in Louisiana for five years. Lesson learned: in the South, rust never sleeps.

I made it a point there to be sure that whenever I put a firearm away, it was thoroughly wiped down with a rag misted with Ballistol. Little nooks and crannies were wiped with a Ballistol soaked Q-tip.

If I didn't shoot a gun for awhile, every couple of months I would periodically take it out and inspect it, and do the whole over again.

Every so often, I was very happy I did that, as I would discover a little rust trying to start somewhere.

That's what I was taught to do and it works well. Just a simple oil rag wipe and you're good.

I keep my rifle in a gun sock inside my buckskin cover so oil won't stain the leather, and it helps keep scratches off the rifle too. Any scratches on metal are rust magnets too.

I bought a roll of 8" VCI (vapor corrosion inhibitor) tubing. I do the wipe down thing, put the firearm in a gun sock, and then I make a tube of the appropriate length for the firearm (rifle or handgun) and seal the gun in the tube with an impulse heat sealer. Never seen a speck of rust on any of my firearms. If one is being taken out to be used, just trim off the seal, remove the firearm and it's ready to go. A little extra length lets you reseal the firearm in the same tube (VCI does have a limited lifetime, so I make up new tubes periodically)

My method as well. I never put a gun away without wiping it down with a light coat of oil.
There is a video on youtube that shows how to remove the lever and bolt so yo can reach all areas.
Don't over oil the bolt. Don't loose the ejector spring.
