I have a confession to make!

Post by Squatch » Sun Apr 10, 2016 3:12 pm

I'm a large bore enthusiast!

Back when I was a kid except for 22's guns were for hunting. In the early '80's I lived and worked with a couple of gun enthusiast's. They got me into shooting as a pastime and hobby. They were very knowledgeable. I learned a lot about guns, ballistics, shooting and reloading from them. They are still good friends but I don't see them much as they are not nearby. One of these fellows liked big bullets and it rubbed off. My 1st gun was a 44 magnum.

I don't have a lot of guns. But other than 22's (which I love) all my calibers begin with 4! 44, 45, 45/70. They are all straight wall cartridges. I have nothing against 20's and 30's. It's just not what gets my motor running. Necked cartridges same thing. I like the way a 44 mag cartridge feels in my hand when I put it in the chamber. It feels like a real bullet. The big torpedo of a 45/70 just makes me grin uncontrollably. I much prefer the low frequency thump of a slow big bore to the loud crack of a fast 20 or 30 cal rifle cartridge. I like what happens when the freight train of a big heavy bullet hits something down range. Water bottles and such just tend to vaporize with quite a show.

The downside is that big bores can kick Hard!  That's one of the reasons I now have reloading equipment. Saving money on ammo helps. But the big reason is I can build what I want. TX gunrunner said in another thread that he doesn't reload. He assembles custom cartridges. I couldn't agree more. Many reloader's often load copies of factory ammo with factory components. Petty much to save on ammo costs. I've only been doing this now for a short time. But everything I'm loading is something you won't find on the shelf. It has taken some searching for data. But thanks to the Cowboy Action Crowd the Data is out there to build moderate recoiling accurate ammo from somewhat cheaper components.

I'm really enjoying the loading process. But the testing is even more fun! :D

Big and slow is great fun. Nothing like the whump when you pull the trigger followed by the dull thud of the bullet finding it's mark down range.

Interesting post. I only reloaded to save money and like you said reloaded to factory specs. Although most of my reloading was to NATO or military specs.

Nothing wrong with 357! It's a great flat shooting round. Out of a rifle very similar ballistics to a 30-30 out to 100 yds +. And you have the wonderfully accurate and mild shooting 38 spl as a download.

A friend has an older S+W large frame in .41 mag. I've never wrapped my hand a round a nicer shooting revolver. Elmer was a genius!

Very cool confession, Squatch. I noted all the neat parts of it I liked....

Glad you also said you liked the tried & true .357 Magnum, too. That's my bullet!
I'm doing the research, looking for good equipment buys, and hope to start reloading before too many more days pass by.
My Henry rifle and Ruger revolver are both .357 Magnums, so that's where I'll start and end "assembling custom cartidges!"
Thanks for your post....lots of fun to read!

I like the ctgs. that begin with a .4 also, but we don't yet live in a society where we can't own several, I choose to enjoy a number of calibers.
Still those starting with .4 really stir things up downrange when they hit.! ;)

Actually there is a huge difference between a "handloader" & a reloader.
The Handloader is usually much more into it dilligently working up loads, testing, chronographing, accuracy testing, maybe even fireforming cases.
The reloader is usually happy to have more ammo to shoot.

I think I covered that earlier sorta.

Good original post! Thank you. I showed it to my husband.

My MT husband's favorite handgun caliber began and still begins with a '4' too. Grin.

He had various calibers in handguns and rifles in 60 plus years and his TOP favorite handgun calibers were in a 45acp and 45Long Colt.

He only has 2 total handgun calibers now in 45acp and 9mm. And if he goes to only 1 total caliber for his handguns... it will be in 45acp.

The '45' is his top favorite handgun caliber.

He loves the 45-70 caliber because he could/can hand load or reload it to various degrees. He hand loads it from mild to moderate. I shot one of his former, older 45-70 CT Marlin rifles using a mild load in my early 50's just to try it out. It did not hurt me and he made it just for me. He does have his 'bear loads' for woods/wilderness protection too. He shoots his favorite moderate load for his only 45-70 rifle now.

You name the '4' and I think that he has owned it.

I enjoyed the 45 Long Colt Ruger Blackhawk handgun when I shot mine until I got out of handguns. I enjoyed 45 Long Colt in rifle (Winchester) shooting too. I enjoyed all of my former 357Magnum, 38Special Plus P and 38Special handguns and rifles very much.

Both of us owned some Smith and Wesson Model 29-2 and Model 29-3 handguns for a time frame too. I shot 44Magnum ammunition a bit but I shot 44Specials the most when I did shoot those gifted handguns.

Good shooting to you!

There is nothing wrong with those two great calibers!

My late husband only owned a few firearms in his entire life (Handguns and rifles only.) 'on purpose' and they were in 22lr and 357Magnum calibers.

The nice thing about 357Magnum firearms is that you can shoot some nice 38Special loads out of them too.

I know the other poster said this but I wanted to repeat it and agree with him.

Good shooting to you!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the .357 it's a great ctg. & possible still one of the best for defense.
I've shot a ton of .38s through various .357s & they worked well. I love the .38 Special & light wadcutters for small game & practice. Usually they will shoot litty bitty groups too.
Just when I go to the hills I pack something starting with a .4 we have Grizzlys & most of our Elk country is Grizzly country now too. Actually most of our mountains are Grizzly country.
Good shooting.

Squatch you did, I only expanded on it a bit no offense meant.

Now, that would make for some heads up hiking!

Our largest predator is the Coyote, followed by the Bobcat. We have lots of Black Bears, but they're not predatory, as far as I know. A few years ago, a tagged Mountain Lion wandered into the state all the way from South Dakota only to be killed by a car on I-95. The DEP doesn't acknowledge that there's a native lion population, but there have been numerous sightings and reports that they're here.

Same here, coyotes and bobcat, no black bears. Well, one was spotted last winter in the north after wandering down from Michigan, but that is 300 miles away from here.

DNR denied the existence of bobcats for years until people started publishing photos from game cameras. Now, in certain hiking areas, they have signs posted warning of them. :D

Actually Black Bears do attack people & can become predatory, eating people too.
They are not the cuddly huggy, touchy, kissy, feely, animals Disney & his ilk would lead us to believe.
I am very careful around black bears too!

I liken the black bear situation to the alligator. We have gators in the local rivers. I am careful around them, but won't stay out of the rivers because they are there (I'm a river diver). If we had crocodiles around here, I would not set fin in the water.

I don't worry much about black bears in the woods here. I am always armed, and could probably dissuade one in the unlikely event he decided to attack me. If we had Grizzlys in the woods, I might have to rethink hunting. At a minimum, I would carry a larger caliber sidearm.
