Thought I would ask the pro's here about a new 1860. I am quite shure that I want a 45 cal. I am not shure if there is any good reason to get a Henry or a Uberti. I may use it for hunting so that's why the 45 cal. I have the money to get the one I want, just not shure witch to get. Any info from anyone that has one would be great.

the bottom line is, its your decision .... as might be expected, if money wasn't an issue, I'd go with the Henry .... what type of game do you anticipate using it for .. .. at what ranges ..

Oh, I'm sure Ranch Roper will be along, shortly, to help you. He is Mr. 1860 in 45 Colt. Check some of his posts and his awesome shooting with that 1860 of his.

I've seen Ranch Roper's targets, can't argue with those.
I would be hunting deer and in my hunting area would be well within 100 yards.

An 1860 can hold up to 13 rounds - is that a legal rifle in NY?

Well...here is my two cents....I had a Big Boy 45 Colt (great rifle!) and looked very closely at the HRA 1860 Original and was over the moon when they offered it in 45 Colt. However, by the time it gets here to Canada on a special order (no shops carry it here even now) it was almost $3500. Even selling my Big Boy, I could not justify that amount of dough. I did many many hours of research on the 1860 Uberti and read virtually every review I could find. I had some private message conversations with a forum member here who has shot lots of Ubertis (1866's, 1873's) with the same toggle link action as the 1860. All reports were that the Uberti was reliable, accurate, and historically correct. I bought mine through a Canadian dealer, who is the Cimarron representative in Canada. Cimarron imports Ubertis in Texas. I paid $2k and could not be happier. The rifle is flawless, and if there is one difference I like comparing the HRA to it, it's the brass receiver. Nothing against the HRA brass, but my Big Boy brass was almost too shiny. The Uberti brass is already taking on a patina that I really like. I have never physically seen the HRA one, but the stock looks like it has a little bigger belly on it too. So I researched that as well, and it looks like the first version of the original 1860 back in 1860 had a deeper belly on them. Later versions were like the Ubertis. Doesn't really matter but I just thought I'd mention it. See the link below and see the difference.

The stocks on the HRA ones are absolutely gorgeous but again, the Uberti stock is closer to the originals if you compare museum ones to them. See photos attached. Customer service? I have not had to use it yet. We all know the HRA service is outstanding.

For me; the $1500 I saved bought 1500 rounds of ammo. I'm sure the prices are closer in the USA. You can't go wrong either way, but IN MY OPINION ONLY, the Cimarron/Uberti 1860 is as close as you can get to holding an original in your hands.

I'll add this too: whether HRA or Uberti.....that first time you send lead downrange, you will LOVE it. It's like having your own personal time machine.

Thank you Range Roper. I can get the Henry model for the $2000.00 mark. It is the History of the rifle that is the reason I want one. I know that NYS thinks that they are bad because they hold more than 10 rounds but there are people here in NYS that have them and use them. I came over here from shooting muzzleloaders for 40 years. I got into that for the history of the early longrifles, and also built all my longrifles. I did the pre 1840 living history for years and also belonged to the NYS flintlock team and did some traveling to shoot in serval states.
The legal end is that most law officers don't bother with lever guns. They don't believe they were the intent of the law. My sun in law is a NYS corrections officer and his brother in a member of the NYS police. I should be ok.

under those circumstances, a 45 out of a rifle is more than sufficient .... do you feel comfortable using open sights for hunting at the ranges you anticipate ..

If the dollars had been close I might have leaned the other way. But no regrets.

I came home with a HRA 1860 about an hour ago. I love it. I'll get some pictures up in a day or so.

By the way, RanchRoper is a natural born marksman and his accuracy is way better than most mortal men. I'm 67 now, but if I eventually grow up, I want to shoot as well as he does.

congrats indeed .... they are truly fine rifles .... what caliber ? .... be sure to add it to our How Many ? thread .... as are many others, I'm really looking forward to your range reports and use impressions

Nice shooting!

Here are a few pic's of the 1860 as promised. It is 45 cal. and it just might be a while before a range report. Weather isn't very good here right now.

Thats one very nice looking rifle for sure. The wood on the 1860's is awesome. I have seen a few on GB and thought about getting one but the price just kind of held me back. But so did the wife. Al

BigAl, they are a lot of money. After my heart surgery a year ago Uncle Sam put me on 100% military disability for agent orange from over 49 years ago. I decided money isn't everything (although it helps) and have wanted one for many years and my wife said if I wanted one to get one. She didn't have to tell me twice.
