Henry Rifle Forums

Years ago I knew a guy that could regularly find CZ rifles with exceptional wood. Sadly he's out of the business now.

Being a typical man I like pretty things and nice wood on firearms are no different. Does anyone here know any way to get exceptional wood for a Henry? An FFL with "connections"? Will HRA sell stocks with exceptional wood? Perhaps a company that has the jigs to copy the dimensions of the existing stock to a stock blank?

I know such a project ain't cheap and I can't afford the fancy custom stock-makers but I surely would like to restock my .357 and soon-to-be .41 mag with a really special piece of walnut. I know some places to get real nice stock blanks at comparatively reasonable prices but I don't know how to turn the blank into a fitting stock for a decent price.

Any suggestions?

being way beyond old school, I share your appreciation for nice wood on a firearm .... that is one reason I have no interest whatsoever in an AR type rifle .... if you can find a good gunsmith, he may well know of sources for the type of wood you are looking for .... that said, I tend to believe companies who mass produce the level of wood you are looking for would be pretty scarce

I'd ask Henry Customer Service about it. I'm pretty sure they have people whose job it is to match the grain and color of their stocks and forearms; and they do provide replacement wood for their rifles. It's worth asking about.

With this thread, I just finished examining my Henry. IMO, the fit and finish on my rifle is superb. Not one flaw or imperfection. I guess I would have to see and handle an example from the OP to understand the difference.

I hear you. AR-15s leave me cold. I already know where to get the stock blanks with a fancier grade of walnut for a decent price, what I am looking for is the guy that can turn that big hunk of wood into a fitting stock and do so for a decent price.

I believe that is called quarter cut and it produces a tiger stripe.

The photo of the Dehaan 16 gauage SXS stock would make a beautiful and perfect avatar!

Thank you for the pics. Those two examples look like what I have on my 1936 LC Smith 20 ga.

Then you are truly blessed. Plastic stocks have their purpose. I own more than a few of them. But as I get older the beauty of a gun carries more weight than it used to. I have more guns than I will ever need but in my fading years I'd like to thin the herd a bit and concentrate on guns that are both beautiful but also do the job I ask. Sort of like when I was younger....I liked having really hot women around me but the beauty of my guns was not so important so long as I had plenty. Now I don't mind having a few less guns so long as they are truly beautiful and do their job to the best of my ability.

I've only gone plastic on two long guns -- My Ruger SR-556 FB and Mossberg 590. Both btw are now Magpul. Those two guns are designed to be beat up when it comes time for that. As example (or so the story goes): The 590 experience with the Submarine Service had issues with the barrels not being strong enough to withstand being banged/crimped when going through watertight hatches -- so Mossberg came out with the 590(A1) with stronger barrels and metal trigger and safeties.

My other long guns are very pretty.

I'm going through older threads and just found this one. I was able to get a nice stock on mine by asking the ckerk at DSG to bring several out and let me examine them. This one was a no-brainer. This is after I stripped off the poly and then went over it with lemon oil and several rounds of Howards Feed-n-Wax.

I like wood as well, I don't care for plastic either on rifles so I frankenized my Colt with walnut, yeah I get a lot of flack from the AR group but to hell with them
