Thinking about getting a 22. Would like to hear the pros and cons between the lever actions and the pumps. Also see that the little 22 lever carbines now come with skinner peep sights. Hmmm...

It's difficult to compare a lever action to a pump action. Both are guaranteed to put a huge smile on your face - they'll just do it in a different way.

The lever action is probably smoother and easier to operate. Both are equally accurate. They will both use a lot of ammunition, because you just can't put 'em down.

The only real solution is to buy one of each. You know you want to really.

I have the classic .22 (H001), the Golden Boy (H004), and the .22 Magnum (H001TM). I have had these for several years - long before the small game rifle or carbine came out.
If I was making that decision today, I would definitely choose the small game rifle (H001TRP) or the small game carbine (H001TLP). These come standard with Skinner receiver sights ($100 value). This would be my choice, hands down.

I think I'd start with one of the lever action models. The Henry pump, while very nice, tends to come with a stiff action that takes awhile to break in. The lever guns are slick as snot right out of the box.

Well obviously I plan on getting one or the other for now. I was kind of hoping for a comparison of the 2 versions. Enabling will only make my plight worse. Kinda leaning toward this one with the 16 1/4" barrel...

Also like the pump but heard you are not supposed to disassemble the pump version?

I gonna say you need one of each. I have 2 001Ts one is the Monument Valley model and one is the standard black cover model both with oct barrels. But I couldnt stand all the talk about how much fun the pump was so I bought one. You know its a gas and I really like it. One word of caution I would give is make sure if you are all interested in the Golden Boy that you throw one to your shoulder and see how the drop in the stock lines up for you. I love the Golden Boys but that extra drop in there stock doesnt fit me causing me to having to raise my head up off the stock to line the sights up right. Al

I was going to ask because I really like the evil roy but no one carries one for me to try out. I am 6'5 and wonder if it will be to same for me.

The Evil Roy has the same stock that the 001T has so I think if one of those fits you the Evil Roy would be fine. Al

It may not be obvious from the pictures, but the weight and balance of these guns vary significantly. It would be best to actually handle them prior to deciding.

I can tell you this, around here the H001 Classics are going for $280 in the stores and that is a bargain for sure.

Pumps are for people wanting a pump. If you don't have that burning desire I would say the lever is the better choice.

Just have to decide which barrel length.
Another on my want list is the new Ruger MKIV 22/45 lite with the threaded barrel. Will have to decide whether to get the rifle or pistol first.

Lots of guys like those peep sights. I need to see one first to see what I think. I have used vernier tang sights and like those but I would need to shoulder one with the peep. Al

I went with the H001TRP Small Game Rifle (20"). I need the extra bit of length to allow for my seasoned eyes to clearly see the front sight. It surprised me that I am able to use peep sights. All of my other long guns have either a scope or a red dot sight mounted due to my close up vision is not as good as it was a few years ago.

I shouldered both the carbine length and rifle length guns and I felt that the rifle length gun swung just fine for me. I'm a bigger framed and stand 6'1", maybe my size compensated for the extra weight from the longer barrel.

I can give you a comparison between the two rifles, although not 100% exact. A couple of years ago I had the H001M .22 Magnum Rifle with the 19.25" round barrel. I needed to sell it, but since then I bought another rimfire Henry. A fellow on RFC also asked the same question you asked...."which one?" Here is my answer to him, and for you now, about the new Small Game Carbine I got.

I've had my SGC, model H001TLP in .22LR with the 16.25" barrel, for a year now. I really love shooting/handling this rifle.

I have enjoyed all my Henry rifles -- .357 Magnum Bronze Big Boy, .30-30, steel .357 Magnum Big Boy, H001 in .22LR, the H001M .22 Magnum. Without any hesitation I can say that this Small Game Carbine is my very favorite rifle. I only shoot off hand, and it has a perfect (for me), exquisite balance. I don't even notice holding/shooting it. Of course, the lever action is butter smooth, and I cannot recall any FTFs or FTEs unless caused by my handling.

The accuracy is spot-on after I sighted it in at 50-yards. I'm a fairly good shooter, but this carbine makes me look like a marksman....it is very accurate!

The primary reason I bought it was because of the receiver-mounted Skinner peep sight. On all my Henrys I have changed out the buckhorn sights to Skinner peeps, but this is the first one where the sight is on the receiver. It is a huge positive plus for my elder eyes. And I've only made one adjust to this rifle. I contacted Skinner and requested them to make an identical receiver-mounted peep in bronze to replace the blue sight that came stock. They did a great job, and this added a special dressed-up look to my carbine. For me, it's a great look!!

You may have noticed after these comments....I would be one Henry owner that would give you the "A-OK" on getting an SGC! It is a quality rifle.

Just for fun, here is a photo of my SGC with the bronze Skinner.

The SGC from my experience is a much better-balanced rifle. The .22 Magnum was great, but the SGC is the hands-down choice for me. BTW, several folk on the other rifle forum agreed with my choice for similar reasons.
