Winchester superX 22 mag ammo loading problem
Winchester superX 22 mag ammo loading problem
I have 2 boxes of Winchester superX 22 mag ammo I received with the rifle and loaded my GB with it, while cycling 2 of the shells would to allow me to completely close the chamber. I would not get the "click" with the lever in the full up position. I have heard about the Winchester superX 22 mag ammo and Henry issues so I loaded my GB with 14rds of CCI MiniMags and all shells chamber correctly.
Is there anyone else having ammo chambering issues with their 22mag GB?
Another thing I do not like about Henry is the chamber does not require to be completely closed to pull the trigger.
I purchased 1000rds of the Hornady Varmint Express Ammunition 22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (WMR) 30 Grain V-Max and 250rds of the Winchester Varmint High Velocity Ammunition 22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (WMR) 30 Grain Hornady V-Max from the Black Friday sale and wondering if anyone discovered any problems from these ammo.
This is the first 22 magnum firearm I ever owned so anything 22 magnum I am a true virgin and do not know anything nor do I claim too, but I'm learning.

Re: Winchester superX 22 mag ammo loading problem
I have had the same problem with the same Winchester ammo several firearms including Henry and CZ. I removed the firing pin from my .22WMR Henry and tried cycling what I could. Those I saved and later after replacing the firing pin were shot at the range. They were well worth the effort as they were the most accurate .22WMR ammo I've used. I think its all because of a tight headspace.

Re: Winchester superX 22 mag ammo loading problem
Sir Henry, I think OAL is the problem, I did check the ones that were not chambering and they were about .20mm's longer. I do not reload so I'm not sure if that amount will cause that problem but I am still measuring, the bullets are all within limits and I checked the cases headspace and they were all almost identical +/- .07mm's again I'm not sure if that will cause that problem. A reloaded should know this, I would think it is an important thing to know if you reload. I was also thinking about buying a go/nogo gage but that is used to check the chamber and I'm wanting to check the ammo.
Re: Winchester superX 22 mag ammo loading problem
Winchester Super X .22 LR ammo jams in my H001. It took me awhile to learn my lesson, but I think I can safely say that I will not be buying it ever again.

Re: Winchester superX 22 mag ammo loading problem
I never checked the OAL. What about just the brass? Was it longer or was the bullet not seated all the way?

brass was good, bullet seating may have been the problem. I am going to chamber a few new boxes of the ammo I purchased on black Friday, I'll let you know if I find anything.

I've had so much trouble with Winchester primers and rimfire ammo that I refuse to buy their ammo any more.

Re: Winchester superX 22 mag ammo loading problem
I had problems with Winchester .22lr feeding in both of my semi autos. Even the more expensive Super X stuff. Mostly the broad tip of the hollow points would hang up on the feed ramp. Many other brands had no issues with either gun. I also had issues with them not lighting off.
I never had chambering issues, and I don't own a .22 WMR. Just relating that I have found their rimfire ammo problematical in my weapons. My Henry H001 will feed .22lr that my other weapons won't.
Full disclosure, this was during the height of the great rimfire ammo shortage. Still, no one else seemed to be having the same level of issues. I'm sure GC at the plants was not as thorough then as it is now.

Don't know about Henrys, but lots of reports of Super X 22 LRs fitting too tight or not at all in individual Ruger revolvers. Not sure if it's lack of QC on Winchester's or Ruger's part, but, yes, have heard of it.

Did you mean to say you loaded MaxiMags?Tape wrote:I have 2 boxes of Winchester superX 22 mag ammo I received with the rifle and loaded my GB with it, while cycling 2 of the shells would to allow me to completely close the chamber. It seems like I have also heard something about the WIN WMR being oversized or something at RFC also.
I could never find any to buy, though
Re: Winchester superX 22 mag ammo loading problem
I have checked the OAL of all the shells from the Winchesters SuperX box, Hornady and the Winchester Varmint and there is no significant differences. I checked the diameter, OAL, case length, bullet diameter and nothing out of the ordinary. But while cycling the SuperX I still couldn't completely chamber a few rounds but if I put them in manually the lever would lock with an audible click. All the Hornady and Winchester Varmint ammo cycled and locked in the chamber perfectly, All the ammo I am using is new so condition of the ammo isn't a issue. I am honestly stumped on this.
The only thing that I can think of is if the SuperX is going into the chamber at an awkward angle but if this were the case why is the Hornady and the Winchester Varmint not jamming? While cycling all the ammo the SuperX did seem to have a drag while chambering and the Hornady and the Winchester Varmint were silky smooth chambering, I wonder if the case metal is the reason but I think brass is brass and it all feels smooth to the touch. Maybe it's whatever chemical is used to wash the cases and leaving a residue causing a drag because it isn't just me but so many other people are having this issue and it not Henry specific.

Re: Winchester superX 22 mag ammo loading problem
Look at the rim thickness. Mine I could see the rim was slightly thicker but more important was rounded where it sticks out from the main case. Try to post a close up of the Winchester and others.

SH, are you talking about the thickness of the wall of the shells?

No not the wall thickness but rather the rim thickness.Tape wrote:SH, are you talking about the thickness of the wall of the shells?

Re: Winchester superX 22 mag ammo loading problem
I bought a box of Winchester Dynapoints in .22WMR shortyly after I purchased my Henry H001TM. The case diameters were too large and would not chamber. I contacted Winchester and they had me ship the box of shells to them. I never did get a response from them. My Henry .22WMR has never fired Winchester round. I have only used CCI Maxi-Mag, Hornady, or Remington and never experienced any problems with them.
In my area of the country, .22WMR is still impossible to find (.22LR and .17 HMR are readily available now).

WMR will show up in abundance. When they do sell a kidney and buy all you can.

I ran 32rds through my Henry, I had 4 that would not get an audible click with a locked chamber and 28 that did. I measured the rim thickness of the 4 that didn't and the reading as follows;
1.27mm
1.24mm
1.25mm
1.25mm
the 4 of 28 that locked with an audible click;
1.22mm
1.20mm
1.20mm
1.21mm
The complete boxes of Hornady and the Winchester Varmint all locked with an audible click.

Re: Winchester superX 22 mag ammo loading problem
I do not know how accurate WIKI is but they show that the rim thickness should be 1.3mm
