I'm trying to match the color of a set of walnut pistol grips with the stock on a Henry lever action. So far, I have one coat of Tung oil on the pistol grips and they look brown compared to the red tint of the rifle stock. Any suggestions?

I would think that you would match the color before you put the oil on it to seal it. Why don't you take the grips off and experiment with the color on the inside of the grips that won't show when they are back on the revolver.

Tung oil by itself won’t work.


You probably won’t get an exact match, but you can also try blending the two stains in a small container. I don’t recommend tung oil, it isn’t very satisfactory for gun wood.

You might try Watco oil in walnut. It's pretty forgiving , and since you've already oiled it, it might be a safe bet. I also agree with Travlin about experimenting on the back side of thr grips.
