Socks to keep my long guns warm... ;)

Post by Koyote » Wed Jun 15, 2022 2:48 am

My safe is supposed to be able to hold ?? long guns, but with all the ammo, pistols and non-firearm related valuables in there, I can only fit six rifles on one side of the safe. The other side has removable shelves, but they are holding other things.
A few of my rifles were purchased NIB and putting a scope or red dot on some of them leaves little room. I didn't want them to get all scratched or nicked anymore than usual wear, so I saw that one can purchase these long socks that can be slipped over the rifles and even over the mounted scopes. I ordered a half dozen in a package and slipped them over the rifles beginning from the muzzle as the first one I tried beginning at the butt end was very difficult because of the rubber recoil pads. I left one of the rifles uncovered in case of an emergency and it won't get nicked or scratched because all the others are covered.

Make sure to pull the sock from at least one after a few weeks to make sure they are breathing well instead of holding moisture. Don't want your protection from dings and scratches to induce corrosion.

Seems like a good idea. Corrosion is a concern. But, I have not experience any yet. I have kept two handguns (one stainless steel and other blue finish) in sleeves for years (20+), and, they are still in good condition. Now, I did take them out every few months or so and clean them. But, that was able it. Maybe, I just got smiled on. Yet, I don’t kept them in sleeves any longer, want to make sure they get plenty of air. I normally had them in a cool area. That could have made some difference?

Anyway, in the past I had a sock that was treated with silicone for corrosion protection. I’m sure there’re still out there.

I've been using these gun socks for about 6 months now. Since they are designed for firearms they come silicon impregnated to protect from moisture. I love these things. They protect from handling when removing rifles from the safe and so far no sign of rust.

Have used several for a couple years now. Silcone impregnated and I have now had any problems.

I've been using "foot socks" on my pistols for 20 years with zero problems. I use the socks you mention too for my better long guns.

Rifle socks are good in the winter to bring a cold rifle inside a warm house. They warm up slower when you sock them up outside.
