I have some Qs for those who use the lever leather wraps on their Henrys (or other rifles).
~~Do you see any increase in rust developing under the leather?
~~Have you done anything to address that possible problem?
~~If leather is treated with anything (chemical, oil, etc.), would that moisture increase the rust rate?
~~But also have thought that if I do install one, a protective layer of well over-wrapped black electrical tape under the leather might be a helpful rust barrier. What think you of that as a precaution?

I was thinking of ordering one for my Henry SGC with large loop lever. The last time out, especially when I was rapid-firing, I pinched my hand pretty good. I think the wrap might help my hand position and lessen that. Have looked at ones our Gun Stock Cover folk offer.

Just don't even like thinking about rust on my Henry. On my first Brass Big Boy, before I learned how to maintain the lever, within a couple of weeks after I brought it home I had some rust on the side of the lever. That was an eye opener for sure.

we have 2 Henry rifles with large loop levers and 1 with the standard loop .... much prefer the large loop .... have looked a wraps but haven't reached the point of seeing the need

Good questions. I'll keep an eye on mine. I do like the wrap though. Kind of grows on you.

I made this wrap for this gun and never rust my gun in 16 yrs I own and shot it. I use virgin olive oil on all my leather . If it was OK for the Roman's for 2000 yrs it is OK with me .

OK. More Qs, and one issue has always been a stumper for me.

You said you " use virgin olive oil on all my leather." I've seen on the grocery shelves olive oil that is labelled "virgin" and those that are not. For instance, I cook with olive oil and have a bottle on my shelf now. It is Filippo Berio Olive Oil, which is (on the bottle) "oil comprised of refined olive oils & virgin olive oils." No labelling that it is virgin olive oil. So is there a critical difference here? Is virgin olive oil only what you recommend to use on leather, tx gunrunner, and not a refined olive oil, pure olive oil, or even simply plain olive oil?

Second set of Qs. How do you use virgin olive oil on your leather? Do you soak the leather for any certain length of time? Do you just apply the oil to the leather? What method do you treat the leather?

I'd like to say that my Qs are pretty slick, but guess that goes without saying when you're working with olive oil!

Here is the olive oil I've used for over 50 yrs . The paste should answer all your question and tell you the different in olive oils and virgin olive oils .

Quite a lot of info at the paste. When looking at olive oil on the shelves, would need to take the "commercial grades" list along in order to know what is what, and what is best to purchase! The section on the extensive fraud ("Adulteration") in production and labelling of olive oil is not unexpected, and probably yet happening, even with all the regs that have been put in place. So additionally, a person may not know what they are buying due to these illegal practices. Very interesting summaries in your paste.

I still would like to find out your answer to my second set of Qs:

"Second set of Qs. How do you use virgin olive oil on your leather? Do you soak the leather for any certain length of time? Do you just apply the oil to the leather? What method do you treat the leather?"

Olive oil is like a good bottle of scotch or tequilla . It is all about taste . If you can't taste the different between the stuff use for lamp oil and salad dressing buy the cheap stuff . The normally the 1st pressing [ extra virgin ] give you the best taste in my opinion . I like the taste of Bertolli olive oil , Chivas scotch and Jose Cuervo Gold tequila straight out of the bottle .

I rub the olive oil on leather and let it soak in and dry . It will preserves leather and not let it dry out and makes it resist to moisture .

P.S. Try rubbing olive oil on your wife or girlfriend as a foreplay oil .
