Ihave a henrybig boy stainless with the side gate...I tried to figure the twist
using acleaning rod asI have done in the past with other rifles,But cant seemto do it
with this rifle..From what I did get it seems to be a 1/36 ..Does this sound right//
The dealer told be it was a 1/20...Seems like if it a 1/20 the round would have
made a complete turn in 2O iches or a half turn in 10....Any ideas.....I shoot mainly
cast bullets 200 to 245 grains..Thanks..Johnny

If your talking 44 mag., it'll either be 1:38 or 1:20.

This uncertainty about twist rate in Henry center fire rifles has come up before. The company on their website lists the twist for a .44mag at 1:20, yet owners regularly report different rates for the same model. Either Henry is advertising incorrect info, or owners ain't measuring it right. Which is it? A buyer should be able to rely on accurate factory advertised info.

I called to find out and was told I would be called back. No reply yet..go figure.. Finally heard back from them and I was told it was 1in20.. I seriously doubt it. Will try my cleaning rod again just to see what I get this time..

They don't have a damn clue.
I sent mine back last year to have the mag tube replaced, and
they changed barrel and all.
After receiving the rifle back, I called the very next day to ask this very question.
And was told how to figure it out myself.
So good luck with that call.

1:38 seems awfully slow to me for normal hunting, etc. . Thompson Center recommends 1:20 for .44 cal. projectiles, and briefly explains why. Other sources go into more detail, but it has to do with gyroscopic stability and bullet tumbling due to rotational speed being too slow to counteract other aerodynamic forces.

That said,TC recommends 1:20 for .41 also, however my .41 is 1:18. I've not had any stability issues with 190 or 210grn rounds.

Gene I have one of the early 41's, never check it, but can say that it shoots some 270, and 280 gr. pills quite accurately.
Shot some 250 Cor bon ammo last year, at 50 yds. it was one ragged hole.

I've considered getting a box or 3 or the heavy LFNGC and try them out, but they are a little pricey these days if you can even find any. Anyway, the 210XTP has gotten my meat for 3 years without a hitch and I have plenty of them, although the JHP does waste a few ounces of meat in the process. ;)

I never got into reloading, although I do recognize the numerous advantages of it. Wish I had 40 or 50 years ago, but was never in one place long enough to get started & it's too late for me to get into it now. Such is life. :)
