I don't know, either. For sure before the '60's. Most other companies making single shots (Win., Stevens, Iver Johnson, etc.) used that pivoting type of lever, too. There are some others that used a trigger guard location, also. Henry's is how it should be, I think, improved in that it works either way, rather that just to the right.
