Site seems to be OK. Load issue should be resolved now.
2nd time lucky
2nd time lucky
My new 45-70AW this replaces an early H010 from July 2014 that went back Feb 2015 with mag tube issues.
The outer tube needed constant closing up and the pin did wear to the point that the last round could not load.
As no parts or replacement were avaiable at the time I took the refund. A shame as it shot well and the wood was very nice.
The AW is also shooting good at 100 yds but I need more testing at longer range.
It is leaving shallow extra rifling mark along side the fully engraved groove that tapers to the base. The same load shot from my 1895 Marlin has only clean grooves. The AW on the left Marlin on right.Load 400 gr Speer 46 gr AR 2207 (H4198) the AW .457, Marlin .4585. Any concerns ?

Re: 2nd time lucky
1.25" at 100 yds was the best 3 shot group. At $75.50 a box for Speer 400 I need to be economical.Other groups had 2 close 3/4" -1" with a flyer opening it to 2-3",I shot some gongs at 200 yds 6-8" group but the brass was old 2nd hand so neck tension may be an issue. When the wind settles down I will try again at 200 with new Win brass.
I started load develpment with commercial cast 390 gr HB, 415 and 420 Gr plain base sized .459 all left lead in the barrel velocity 1100 to 1500 fps groups not good enough for me 3-4" at 100.

Re: 2nd time lucky
with 1.25" at 100 yds I wouldn't worry about the rifling marks on the bullets .... sounds to me like you have a solid shooter that will perform well once you refine your load
Re: 2nd time lucky
I have an all weather that loves the Hornady lever evolution. Try a box of those you might be surprised.

Strange one, certainly doesn't appear to be effecting accuracy to any real degree.

Hornady Leverevolution 45-70 between $70.00 - $82.00 a box of 20. .22 and shotgun the only factory ammo I buy. Reloading is a must do down here if the trigger is getting pulled on a regular basis.

Beautiful rifle. Congratulations. Those marks on the bullet are curious, though. They don't appear to be rifling grooves, though I don't know enough to say and they very well could be. Please keep us posted.John M wrote:My new 45-70AW this replaces an early H010 from July 2014 that went back Feb 2015 with mag tube issues.
