Bring the 357 Maxie Back

Post by Bake » Mon Nov 30, 2020 1:10 am

I've been looking at some of my old reloading books & notebooks, and I believe a conversion just might be possible. I was thinking about the Henry Single Shot or one of the others might be a solid test bed for the conversion.

A few years ago I was a Silhouette Shooter, using a TC Super in 357 Remington Maximum. Won a couple of NRA "10 Rams" hat pins, and had a "Hell of a lot of FUN". I still have a lot of my supplies.

Has anybody else been thinking along these lines Like taking some of the old Super Mag Handgun Cartridges and going for a run one more time ? ? ?

I loved the 357 Max. Shot it mostly in my Contenders. I doubt it will ever come back, but last I heard, you could still get brass for it. Check the https://www.bellmtcs.com. He is a big fan of the Max and has converted a lot of 357 mag barrels to the Max. Did one for me. He also like Henry single shots.

Yes sir Mike Bellm is a good guy. He has done work for me. Thought about sending mine there at one point but I think if I was going to do a Max I would just buy one from him converted. Check him out for sure. I still have a Contender max in the safe. Welcome to the forum also I see that is your first post.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I recently bought a .357 Henry with the thought of boring it to a maxi. Several years back I reamed a .357 Handi Rifle, which proved to be a pretty simple procedure, and it proved to be very accurate with magnum, as well as maximum, loads. Never did shoot any .38 special through it. That gun was used to take several deer before I sold it off.

If I decide to go ahead with the conversion I'll post results.

Bill.

Another welcome to the forum to Parson48. If you check out Mike Bellm sight the Henry single shot can be converted 2 ways. Because Henry chambered it correctly you can just chamber it so you can stretch out the oal in the 357 case and shoot max loads. This also allows you to shoot regular 357 loads with better accuracy than shoot 357 loads in a 357 max chamber.

Thanks for the "welcome" posts. The rifle that I bought is the HO15-357. I'd been considering one for some time, then my nephew bought a Henry single shot in .44 mag, and I was impressed with the appearance and the accuracy of it- so I purchased the .357.

I did read the info at Mike Bellm's site prior to reaming my Handi rifle to maxi. The Handi's came with such long throats that very little reaming was required to extend it to maxi length. It appears that the Henry will need a little more reaming.

I'm still not sure if I want to do it. I want to have some range time with it to see how it shoots as is.

If I decide to convert I certainly will share results.

Glad to be here.
