Saw a single shot for the fist time

There was Henry Single Shot in 308 on the rack at my LGS.
First time I picked one up.
I was surprised by how small it seemed. I got over there not being a receiver and saw how compact it is.
I'd be a great walking around rifle. One in 556 NATO would be a really fun rifle.

I've never seen/held a Single Shot Henry rifle, but that's an interesting observation about its size.

I did a quick look-up and it's interesting that the single shot 308 is only a few ounces (~3 oz) lighter than the Long Ranger 308. Wouldn't think recoil would be an issue.

PT7 and I did hold onto a single shot 20 gauge recently. It shore was purdy...

Yep they are - I really like my NEF Handi-Rifle in .223.
Mine has the bull barrel but it's only 18" so still not to bad for offhand shooting.

I agree on the 223. It's our bread and butter centerfire rifle cartridge. Great accuracy, mild recoil, wide range of loads and especially for us, since we no longer reload, factory ammo is cheap and plentiful. We shoot the 223 in our bolt guns, our single shots and even in our Contender pistols.

I really like my 357 SS and would buy another one. Im waiting for more calibers. I have a Burris 2 x 7 x 32 on mine. Great scope for that rifle.

I sure hope they offer some more. None of the current models appeals to me but I would buy a .327 Federal Mag rfle in a heartbeat.

I have had three Contenders and a stunning Browning 1885 Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation commemorative. I no longer have any of them but I keep coming back to the single shots.... they are so appealing.

The nice thing about the Henry single shots is that they're relatively inexpensive for what we get. Sure, we have the heavy trigger issue, but that's easily cured. Wood quality, overall fit and finish compare favorably to some substantially more expensive rifles (of which I own a couple). They are about as basic as you can get, part of the attraction for me, I guess . And I'd also like to see some more cartridge options. 25-35, anyone? .35 Remington? There's a bunch out there we're still missing.

I never really considered a sigle shot seriously until now. After handling the 308 I think a Single Shot is a viable alternative for the less shot calibers I have. .243 and .223 come mind.

I came close several times to buying the 44 mag. But I resisted the temptation and waited because there was talk of the 357. I also cant help but think that there suggestion box was full of 357 requests for that caliber in the single shot. Im betting if you buy one of those 2 calibers you mentioned after you get the first one a second one might follow.

I handled a 243 single shot at Cabelas...wow, what a great feeling rifle. Tempting to be sure. I will hold out for another caliber. Hoping for a 270? We will see.

I just saw a couple of SS rifles for the first time. One was steel, the other brass, both in ..44 Mag. They had very impressive workmanship and wood quality. I could not try the triggers because both had locks. I did operate the action levers and was happy to see that they take no real effort, unlike my Contenders, which I sold off because it was getting to the point where I could not comfortably operate them.

I still think they are too darned heavy and a small bore rifle would weigh even more than these .44s..... I would love to see a shorter lightened model in .327 Federal. Maybe an 18” fluted barrel? Threaded muzzle? Is that asking too much?
