Hunting with a 45-70

I used the 45-70 single shot a couple of times this year. It's nice to carry, short in length, a very handy rifle. And if you get bored on the stand, you can admire the wood. I sighted it in using Hornady 250 grain Monoflex cartridges, which grouped at about 1 1/2 inch, 2 inches high, at 100 yards. Then I took an antlerless deer today at about 20 yards. It definitely worked, in my sample of one . No surprise there, though. The 45-70 has been an effective game cartridge for over 140 years .

My son-in-law is deer hunting this year with his 45-70. I'll see him at our family Thanksgiving get-togther tomorrow. Sure hope he has a harvest story to tell, too. If not, we still have our antlerless hunting portion open throughout this weekend.

My first experience with the 45-70 was about 20 years ago. I wasnt using it for hunting but for long range shooting in a Shiloh Sharps. I was casting my own bullets from 30 to one lead with a Paul Jones Creedmore mould. The bullet dropped at about 540 grains. I then pan lubed them and set them atop a 030 vegie fiber wad with 68 grains of 2ffg for horse power. When the steel sounded off at anywhere from 250 on out to a thousand yards it sure was cool. I dont have that gun anymore but still have the 45-100. But I do have memories of that Shiloh everytime I take out my 2 Henrys. I really like the 45-70
