New Project
Went to the Pawn shop just to shoot the breeze last Wed. Looking around and found an old single shot 22. It's a J Stevens Arms Springfield Model 15. Was a little rough around the edges but for it's age not bad. The wood is really nice. Took it apart and started cleaning with a mixture of Kroil/ motor oil and a brass brush. Real nasty spots got some cleaning with 0000 steel wool. Checked the bore, really dirty so it got the cleaner and patch treatment. Reassembled and decided that I needed to hear it bark. Went outside with a couple of 22 shorts and give it a go. Happy to say all went well. Nice soft trigger and eject spent casings properly. Overall I'm very pleased with my $112.41 rifle. This weekend it's off to the range to see how I can do with it at 50 and 100 yards.

Sounds like a fun one, the old Steven's are hard to beat.

Re: New Project
I always got a lot of satisfaction from taking some discarded item and bringing it back to life again. Back in my pharma development days, we had a cage area where people would bring things that weren't working, or just not used anymore. Lots of vacuum pumps, transfer pumps, temperature baths, stuff like that. I'd find one that I could use, and take it all apart, clean it up, beadblast the nastier areas and repaint it if it wasn't made of stainless. Vacuum pumps and transfer pumps were usually easy to fix, and most needed only a seal or just fresh oil after a good flush. Then people would come into the lab and tell me I had their pump or bath, or whatever. Nope, sorry, not yours anymore.
Good for you that you got that rifle and brought it back to life. I love reading stuff like this.
