Roll my own

I have a favorite lure for catching fish in the Adirondack waters. It's the Blue Fox. But with most of the lakes and ponds there being snag-o-matics and the lures being 4 to 6 dollars each, it could be an expensive proposition. I tried to make my own lures with weedless treble hooks. They didn't snag on the many trees and branches and weeds in the mountain waters, but they also were lousy at setting when you had a bite. The few fish that were caught were barely on.

So now I roll my own with regular trebles. My unit cost is between .25 and .75 cents, depending on the fancy weight in the center. They are easier on the pocket and to my surprise, they seem to work. Here are two recent examples I got ready for this season.

Hey, Dave, I used to roll my own spinners, back in the day. It's a fun and easy and, especially, affordable, way to make your own lures. Used to get all my components from Cabela's, then I would sit down and make a few spinners after the kids were put to bed.

Do you dress your trebles up with plastic worms or such?

No, I leave the trebles bare like those two pictured. I'd like to say that this weekend I caught something on it, but the pond I hiked into was still frozen over.

I have ordered from lure parts online and mudhole. Both were good to deal with.

Nice Dave. Tina and I tie our own flies, but i've never tried to make my own spinners. We have modified a few...

How did you modify them? Do you have pictures?

We may change the trebles to a different size or color, add a "tail" of feathers or fur to hide the hooks, or add legs to increase the action. Sorry no pics now.. but if I come across one I've modified I will snap a pic and post it.

Oh, we have also repaired or upgraded favorite spinners when they finally died.
