I'm looking for recommendations for a Range Finder .... It would be used mostly while traveling to determine distances to a given object .... the longer the range the better .... possible use for rifle hunting .... a link to info and source would be appreciated

I don't have one personally, but check out the Sig Sauer Kilo 2000. A friend has one, and it's excellent. Amazon has it, I'm sure Optics Planet and others do, as well.

didn't know Sig Sauer made one .... they are a good company, I will most certainly take a look .... suggestion appreciated

My son has a Bushnell Tour V3 for golf and really likes it!
Not sure if that would work for you.

Bushnell is a good company, well worth a look .... historically I have gone with Nikon optics and have looked at their range finders .... to me these things are expensive and I don't want to spend the money but once ....

I have a Bushnell that I got from work as a retirement gift. It's worked just fine for me for over 2 years now. Does Yards or Meters. It has an automatic uphill shot factor built in for bow hunting.

thanks for the link .... all of the scopes we use are made by Nikon so one of their range finders would be logical to consider

I have/use this exact same range finder.
Agree with SH's eval....like my unit a lot.

as of right now, I'm leaning toward the Sig Sauer Kilo 2000 .... the Nikon MONARCH 7i VR is a bit cheaper and has some nice features .... the major drawback for me is it is rated out 550 yards .... for our use the Sig's 2,000 yard range is a prime concern .... no, I don't plan on taking 2,000 yard shots with our Henry 44 Mag or 45-70 .. .. there are some good YouTube videos on the Sig

I hope you like it. I got an entry level Leupold a few years ago. It was good. I hope your new one works well.

when I say I have an old range finder, by today's standards, its ancient .... it works like binoculars where you have to focus each eye .... according to Amazon, it should be here tomorrow .... sure hope that works out

our Sig Sauer 2000 rangefinder arrived today and I've had a really good time working with it .... all-in-all, color me impressed .... using it has confirmed that outside of 25 yards, I'm a terrible judge of distance .... sitting outside of our camper I have target rich field of targets out to over 150 yards .... one thing that really impresses me has been its ability to range small objects .... one camper is 74 yards away .... an orange bucket on the other side can be seen in the through the gap between the bottom of the camper and the ground .... the rangefinder locked in on it and showed it was 77.5 yards away .... hopefully over time I will be able to do a better job of estimating distances

Lessons Learned So Far :

positives :
the Sig is very easy to use --- it takes readings very quickly --- it can be held in any position (as in at an angle or even upside down) --- it is easy to focus ---

negatives :
with a 7X lens you have to hold it very still at longer ranges --- it isn't designed to be attached to a tripod (I understand something is available in the aftermarket to use a tripod with it) ---- they recommend removing the battery when it won't be used for a while --- it took some looking in a small box to find where they packed the directions


observations :

the longest distance I've ranged has been 460 yards .... they say it can range a deer at 1,200 yards .... now that I've seen how far 460 yards is, I can't imagine 1,200 .... I also have an even greater respect for folks who can shoot accurately at such distances .... it will lock onto a telephone wire further than you can see the wire without magnification .... it won't lock onto the contrail of commercial jet ....

all in all, I'm very pleased with it

as noted, your recommendation is appreciated .... without it, I doubt I would have ever looked at one

update :

I continue to enjoy learning how to work our Sig Sauer 2000 rangefinder .... I've managed to range a buzzard circling in the sky at 436.2 yards .. .. it can range small, unobstructed objects at great distances .... seeing just how far 400 yards really is, I can't see ever taking a shot on a game animal at that distance .... out that far my best option is to pull out the binoculars and enjoy watching the critter .... given our 300 WBY, 300 yards seems to be the longest range I'd so much as consider .... even if you can't see it, it will provided a reading for the closest object .... example a thin phone wire over 250 yards away .... the more congested the area you are tying to range, the harder it is to get a reading on a specific item .... example : the further away it is, the harder it gets to lock onto a specific tree .... all in all, still really pleased
