earlier today I dug a first generation Shooting Chrony ===> http://shootingchrony.com/ <=== out of the closet .... as best I can remember, it hasn't been turned on (much less used) since the early '90's .... inserted a new 9V battery, turned it on and when tested, it worked .... I tested it by firing a few BB's through it .... question for those who use a Chrony type unit, how far from the muzzle do you place it when testing a powerful centerfire cartridge .... example: a 45-70 .... the newer model Chrony units have view screen that can be moved so that it isn't exposed to the affects of a heavy muzzle blast .... ours doesn't

info appreciated .... HSM Cowboy and Big Game loads shoot well in our 45-70 .... my plan is to start by finding their speeds and then coming up with a reload that matches

I fired a half dozen from our Dan Wesson revolver and all 6 registered between 350 and 358 jps .... didn't think that was too bad for having such a short barrel

Well when you pull the trigger on a center fire pistol the bullet pushed the Air out of the barrel
So that's like a Air gun.

As a avid Air gunner I have used chronys for years. I have one permanently stationed my my desk facing the widow and overlooking my back yard with all kinds of targets. You do not need but a few feet for most airguns. Co2 maybe a little more. I have used the "Crony Red" for years, but now use the "Caldwell". It is in my opinion the best bang for the buck. Very easy to use my cell phone or tablet as a real time screen and to store data and do calculations.

I've had a Chrony for over 15 yrs and never found them a thing I really needed . I use the targets to tell me everything tell me the whole story on my ammo . I use my Chrony just for test firing new loads to see if my loads are at the fps I want them to be at . My Cowboy stuff I shoot them at 750 fps and CCW ammo I like 1000 fps and all my hunting loads need to be around max . It is a good tool but most books me in the ball park and the chrony to just make sure it is where I want it .

As a Air gun enthusiast, I test a lot of Pellet gun ammo. And they make a lot. For years I used the "Shooting Chrony" however a few years back I bought a Caldwell Precision and never looked back. Certainly for the price, you cannot beat it. I use my cell phone or tablet for a screen and use their free software to store data, send data, and compute strings etc. The lights for indoor work better very well. I have one on my desk where I shoot out the window all year long. You get a lot for your bucks.
