I had the same problem once it turned out to be the water pump impeller located i the lower end

Running lean will also cause them to run hot. As was mentioned, look at the telltale. That's the stream of water coming out somewhere between the head and the foot. Make sure it is a strong stream, if not then either the pump is failing or there is a blockage somewhere.

As to running too lean, that is likely the carb, which you have hopefully taken care of.
