I was fishing Wells Beach,Maine yesterday afternoon just casting a top water Chug Bug to see if any striped bass were interested. All of a sudden I hooked what I thought was a small striper. I reeled the fish in and realized I caught some sort of trout. I’ve heard of sea trout, and Atlantic salmon etc... but was unsure exactly what I caught. I took the pic to Cabelas and showed it to an employee in the fishing department and he said it was a sea run brown trout. He said it’s a rare catch. I’ve been fishing this area for over twenty years and I’ve never heard of anyone catching a trout here. Pretty cool fish. Thought I’d share it.

That's cool. Did it have vampire teeth? The trout we'd catch in the waters off the tidewater areas of the VA coast had vampire teeth.

The teeth looked just like the teeth on the fresh waters browns I catch back home. They weren’t any bigger.

When Tina and I first started fishing down at VA Beach the guys laughed and told us to be careful when we caught specks because they had fangs. We thought they were joking. Then I caught my first speck and found out they "really did have them." Needle sharp vampire fangs." Some were thin and not that long, but some were spikes. You didn't want to thumb a speck like you would a bass, or if you did, you wanted to make sure you were tucked up tight in the side of it's mouth.

My very first speck, caught kayak fishing the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, pulled out at the beach and took a pic.

You’re welcome. Me neither. I keep looking at the pic and the more I compare it to an Atlantic salmon, the more I think it is one.
The guy who said it was a brown trout explained that there are brown trout in the Mousam River which Im not far from and they’ll leave the river for the ocean.
I think I need a second opinion. Lol

Man your fish has some nice color to it! Thanks for sharing.

We really miss fishing in the salt water, but the drive and traffic got to be too much.
Plenty of fresh water all around us.

I do believe that’s a sea run brown trout and yes to do come out of the Mousam river and fall is when they’re caught that must be a young one because they’re generally guite heavy.

I’ve seen some nice ones friends have caught. I don’t fish for them I’m a Brook Trout and Landlocked Salmon angler but do like Pike fishing with flies as well.

I have caught many of them here in Florida and I believe the "official" name is Spotted Weakfish. We always called them Speckled Trout.

When my parents lived in Port St. Lucie, my dad and I would fish the Indian River lagoon and the specs (as my dad called them) were always cooperative. Tie on a Krockodile spoon or something shiney that casts well, keep it above the vegetation on the way back in, and the specs will find it. Those were typically 12" to 18", and were fun to catch, especially while wading.

I've fished in the Wells Main area too, and that inlet seems like a popular spot during the day, lots of people fishing there. I tried walking around the inshore side of that inlet, and even fished from the area near that restaurant on the opposite shore just inside of the inlet, but no luck for me there. One particularly foggy night, there was a dredge in the inlet, and it was pumping sand up from inside the inlet, then it would make a run out offshore about a mile and dump it, then come back and do it again. You could see how high that ship floated empty, and how low it sat when full. All the lights were visible through all the fog, but it looked like a spaceship when it would disappear going offshore, and then reappearing a short time later. In my mind, I figured that there had to be fish feeding where all that bottom was being disturbed, but I never caught anything, so maybe not.
That Wells area is a beautiful area to fish though.
