Mercury V12 600HP Verado Outboard

Post by JEBar » Fri Feb 19, 2021 10:01 pm

saying it right up front, I am not a fan of Mercury outboard motors .... I've owned 2 and had way too many problems with both .... all that being said, they have come out with a Mercury V12 600HP Verado outboard that has some amazing technology .... no clue what they sell for .... I'd sure love to drive a boat powered by one or more of them

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I owned a Glastron. XL205 for about 10 years. It was an inboard stern drive. Stern drive was a Volvo twin countershaft. The out if the hole power and quickness to plane of the boat with that set up is pretty amazing. Never was a Merc fan either. Johnson and Evinrude were always my favorites. Wonder what kind of gas consumption that 600 has.

My dad had a 24' Sea Ray with a Merc inboard outboard in it. Boat ran nice once you got it up on plane. But the real fun was when I was a kid and the 10' cedar-strip boat with the 18 hp Evinrude outboard motor. I thought I was king puttering around in that. Lots of fishing.

per their website ===> https://www.mercurymarine.com/en/us/eng ... /#overview

"Test boat: 43-foot, 22,000-pound day boat

The result is 20% better fuel economy at identical cruise speed and 24% better fuel economy at top speed with two 600hp Verado outboards versus triple 425hp outboards from the leading competitor."

all that being said, I'm sure the number would be given in gallons per mile

How are these newer Mercurys for major servicing? Do they require valve adjustments, does that require removing the cams? Do they have belt or chain cam drive? Are they owner friendly, or do you need to be on a first name basis with the local dealer? I guess this also applies to Yamahas....

I don’t own a boat, and the biggest outboard I ever operated was 8 bhp, but this would be the last motor I would choose, give me an Evinrude 2 stroke, but unfortunately they are now gone.

I did own a Mercruiser Alpha 1 V8 in a 1988 SeaRay 270 Sundancer. What a complete POS boat that was, the engine was just OK. I had lots of problems with the boat and the power plant.

Your post pushed a memory button in my head. I well remember those 18hp Evinrudes. They were a solid outboard and ran really good. I use to patrol boat at outboard races when I was a kid. It was a blast. Had one of those 18HP on the patrol boat. That boat was smaller and light so it would run pretty good. We also use to run 10HP on the back of some 10 and 12 ft aluminum boats up and down Puget Sound in Washington. That was alot of fun.

Im betting if one can afford one of those engines his gas worries are none at all. Im probably way off base but I bet thats a 30K engine

Some research shows I was way off. These engines will cost 80000.00. Thats more than my RV. Its only money
