Home pellet, BB, and slingshot range.

Post by Sir Henry » Sat Jul 09, 2016 12:26 pm

I'm building a home range for non-firearm type of shooting. Instead of having one firing line and having targets at various distances I want to develop it like a golf course and have different "holes". The targets need to be metal, not flat to avoid ricochets. I have one store bought rimfire bullet stop which works perfect because it also captures the rounds. So what are your suggestions for targets? Keep in mind I'm heavy on re-purposing items so it doesn't need to be firearm targets. My other target that I use is a windmill. You can hit the target but if the blade is in the wrong position you don't hear the gong and it doesn't count. And I have some car hub caps and an old aluminum coffee pot. But I use those as one hole. The course should have nine "holes" and should vary.

I'm thinking that I may count shots and as soon as you get a hit you move to the next target with the goal of a low score. Or I can do it with timing.

So think outside the bullet trap and help me with some great ideas in both targets and shooting contests.

This is what I have so far. This view is from the covered shooting area out to three targets. One is just a shovel I stuck in the ground and can easily be moved. The windmill is more challenging because you can hit the center mass and still miss because of the gaps and holes. Plus when the wind is blowing the blades might be sideways to you making the tail the target. The bullet trap is black and in the shadows in the picture but in person is easily visible.

Out to the side is this empty flower pot.

This is looking back at the covered shooting area from between the bullet trap and the windmill.

So I'm thinking this might be one station with three shooting distances. I could then make another shooting station and still shoot the same targets but would make some closer/larger or further out and smaller. Or I could use the one station and shoot BB's, a catapult, and maybe a 17 pellet. I shot about a hundred BB's in my Red Ryder today and got fairly good and fast.

You have been busy since I last saw the backyard.

I'm going to do just that. I did add a hub cap and an aluminum coffee pot that I tired to a tree. But they have been there a couple years. In the winter when its cold out I'll just open a window and shoot from inside. Yes I have done a lot of work to the place but still have a lot more to do.

That is a cool back yard for sure.

I always liked shooting pie plates with handguns. The ones you reset by pulling the string. Perhaps you could fashion something like that for air gun shooting.

Great idea on your range.

My backyard range doesn't even come close to your range in TN. But I make due with what I can which is non-firearm type of shooting. I was hiking in a county park the other day and saw a frisby course and though I could do something similar for my needs.

Old paint cans, soup cans, hang some up so they move when you hit them. Nice range, and good idea.

I don't think I posted all my ranges I had there . Here is my pistol , 22 and pellet gun range and to the right of it was my archery range not picture . All were shot off my back door landing , no benches or table would fit there .

Man you are lucky to have a range like that tx. I envy you guys living in a area that will allow this. You live in shooting heaven.
