Today it was just me. And I only had the Henry single shot .243. First the story of musical scopes. A Nikon slug hunter 2.5-7 X 32 - parallax set to 75 yards (non-adjustable). A Leupold Vari X3i 3.5-10 X 40 - parallax set to 150 (also non-adjustable). About 18 months ago I got a Savage .17hmr for my daughter and stopped by the local shop on the way home and picked up the Nikon. Wanted the slug hunter for the eye relief so she wouldn’t be scope shy and 7 power is plenty for a rifle that’s best 100 yards and in.

Fast forward to the Henry. Brought it home and stole the daughter’s scope for hunting season. Well it sat very nicely on the Henry so I picked up the Leupold for the .17. It’s a fine scope, but with the parallax set at 150 yards, it just wasn’t good for close in work. I thought about having the Leupold set to 75 yards, but the Nikon worked really well on the .17 when first mounted. Soooo - swapped the scopes earlier this week. Today out to the range.

Got to the range and a couple gentlemen we’re already there with their 6.5 creedmores. They were getting ready for a speed goat hunt in Wyoming - and shooting 300 yards. Walking back and forth three hundred yards makes for a slow range session but that’s ok - these gentlemen had work to to.

I went to the 50 yard range to get on paper and get close before moving to 100. Here’s the 100 yard group.
The group measured 7/8”. I’ve shot better, but still more than acceptable with my standard rest - rolled up carharts.

Then I thought what the heck - adjust the scope a bit and see what happens at 300.
That group measured 5” on the button. Some day I’ll bag it up properly at the range and see what it can really do. Until then I reckon I’ll just kick back and grin thinking about how well this critter shoots.

Good shooting at 100 yards. I couldn’t see the 300 yard target picture. I like the .243 caliber.

Nice shooting, especially that 300 yarder. For sure, 300 yards is spotting scope country for scoring and a good spotting scope at that.

Eh - I could probably use the exercise. Time walking saves ammo, too. And all that walking makes you want to focus when you’re on the firing line.
