45-70 X Range report

Well I got to try out my new X today. Just getting a feel for it and how it handles. I really like it and can see this being a keeper, but not shooting full house loads that's for sure. Using the stock irons it was shooting a little low at 50 for me, after going through every allen key I had none fit the set screw to adjust the site so I just held dead on instead of my normal 6 o'clock hold. I made up 25 rounds of 405gn Missouri Bullets, 10x12.5gn trail boss, 5x13gn Unique, 5x13.5gn Universal which was most accurate and 5x47gn Varget. I hope I never have to shoot those Varget loads again  :o . Things I learned, I never want to shoot 47gn Varget and a 405 again. The TB loads were extremely soft and accurate enough at 50, The Universal loads can easily become "my load" with a little work. I need to put an allen key that fits the set screw for the sights in my range bag. I will probably put a low power scope on it just because I prefer one and I have my M1 Garand for iron sight shooting. My ACME bullets 350gn came in so I get to do some load development with them next time. It was a fun outing with more to come I hope.

I as well have had good luck with Universal. My load is 16 grains with a Berrys plated 350 gr. Glad you like the new X.

Nice review! How did you like the Unique load? I find those most pleasant to shoot in my two .45-70 rifles.

The Unique load shot well. The recoil impulse was not bad, slightly less than Universal and slightly more than Trail boss, at least to my perception. I'm leaning to the Universal load mostly because I have 8 lbs. of it.
