Range Report_SGC and Me_6/28/16

Post by PT7 » Tue Jun 28, 2016 8:15 pm

I did have the chance today to shoot my Henry SGC .22LR at the local MO Dept of Conservation range. Although the blistering mid to upper 90's have diminished, it was still a warm 86 degrees in the range booths with practically no wind to either cool the brow, or trouble the bullets!

Simple report again with home-made, patched-up splash targets. The only goal today was some rapid fire, just to shoot & enjoy the lever action.

AMMO
50 rounds shot of Aguila 40gr High Velocity.
30 rounds shot of Browning Perf. Rimfire (BPR) 40gr RN.
It's not real easy to tell which ammo performs better as I shoot off hand only. That rifle is just not as steady as when on a rifle rest, so any attempted groups are not an accurate report.

SHOOTING POSITION & SIGHTS
Off-hand standing.
I continue to use the stock iron sights Henry and Skinner have on the SGC: receiver-mounted peep sight, and front brass bead.

DISTANCES
25 and 50 yards.
Hopefully when I get out to hunt squirrel, they will agree to this distance!

TARGETS

I first shot 40 rounds at these three 6" splash targets, set at 25 yards. These were my "warm up" rounds, no rapid fire yet.
Left target has 18/20 POIs.
Center target has 10/10 POIs.
Right target has 10/10 POIs. But I started to move entire group to the right here. Again no wind, so I was the one drifting, not the SGC!

I shot 20 rounds each at these next two 8" splash targets, set at 50 yards. Again my goal was plain 'ole fun, so I pushed out rapid fire rounds, as much as I thought the RO would allow. ;)

Top target has 8/20 POIs.
Bottom target has 10/20 POIs. This was my last target today, and again I shot total of 80 rounds. Usually my elder eyes get a little tired between 80-100 rounds, but I was quite pleased with this final group of 50% POIs in target.

The remaining rounds that are not in these two targets are a little here, there, and everywhere.
But I was just fine with my total result of 45% rapid fire hits at the 50-yard line! That still gives me an on-going goal, and room to improve for the next range time.

Glad to end my short report with not a single complaint about the Henry SGC. It's a great rifle!

Not bad at all. Free standing, rapid fire, nice work.

Glad you enjoyed a range day. Wish I could have been there.
You have reminded me that my Heny has been neglected. Next trip it is going.

Free hand at 25 and 50 yards with iron sights, Yeah, I would be happy with that shooting any day of the week.
