First time shooting beyond 100 yds.

My buddy decided we needed to go to the Palmetto State Armory outdoor range and shoot longer than 100 yds. It was about an hour and a half drive, but we really enjoyed it.
I was pleased with the performance of the Weatherby. I can definitely see MOA to sub MOA performance with just a little work on my part. Recoil was much more manageable at the better shoulder angle than I can get either prone, or on the poor height of the bench at the indoor range. This is my hunting rifle that I got the Boyd's stock for at Christmas. I did not expect to do as well as I did based on the 25 yd performance.
I was disappointed with the performance of the Savage .223. I have always thought of it as a tack driver. Again shot mostly at 25 yds at the indoor range, and getting cloverleaves.
I need to get Clovispup out there. I think she might enjoy shooting longer range. I decided not to try the 300 yd station, but save that for next time.

What’s the twist rate on your Savage. It might like a heavier bullet say in the 69 gr range. You might give some match ammo a try. Mine is a 1-9 twist and loves the Sierra 77 grain Matchking’s. Mine are handloads but I loaded them to 2650 fps about 100 fps less than the Federal Gold Match.

I believe it is 1 : 9. What powder are you using for the Matchkings?

Sounds like a fun day.
I used to have a Savage/Stevens 200 with the 1:9, foolishly sold, that would shot small groups at 100 yds.
With the cheap Tula 62 gr HP's.
Killed a deer at 85 yds., and 2 coyotes also one around 50 yds., and another in the neighborhood of 265 yds.
Should have kept that one.

My grandfather's WW1 M1917 30-06 given to him in the 1920's by his brother in the Army Air Corp. Then sporterized by my dad in the '60's. Now mine and shooting from the 1000 yard line with the original barrel.

Last time I did that, was in the army, Infantry training/qualifying. M16 & M60 machine gun out to 800 yrs for M60, if I remember correctly. This was in'67. Pop up half silhouttes. Fun. Burned up a lot of powder, LOL.

23.5 of Varget. BR-4 small rifle bench rest primers. My rifle does have a 26” bull barrel.

As does mine.
I've thought about getting some Varget. It is a bit pricey. My local go to good price outlet for powder and primers doesn't carry it.
