Good day at the range today. 20F but no wind finally, after having 85 mph winds the other day. Took my 1860 Henry 45 Colt and some 200 gr 7.0 gn Universal reloads with me. I really like this load, great fun to shoot and accuracy seems pretty good. I bought some little 3" targets that I have never tried before. I think it might have been NCG who told me awhile ago that they help get your groups small, but anyway they surely do. Best I've shot in some time. This is since I changed up my shouldering the butt of the rifle. The butt is tucked more into my upper bicep at the shoulder, and not so tight into my body. Seems comfortable.

25 yds off hand standing, 1 on each 3" target


a 12 round group on one at 25 yds, again off hand standing



...and a 12" target at 50 yds, shooting from 1 knee buffalo hunter style....

Great job on those small 3 inch targets RR ! Looks like a great load for the 1860 too.
I'm hoping to get out tomorrow as it's supposed to be near 70 and little wind. My wife wasn't feeling well today so stayed around the ranch house.
We are having a fairly mild winter so far but that ol' Virginia weather can pull a fast one on you anytime!

That is some super 25 yard offhand work. More great shooting, cowboy.

Yeah, I've been known to preach the aim small, miss small gospel. It does work, assuming you can see the target well enough for the sights you are using. Your shooting stance is also a factor. I do well with a 3" bull, even a 2" bull at 25 yards for all my offhand work.

At 50 yards, 3" still works for me with iron sights, but not offhand. I'll need a rest, then. Offhand at 50 with iron sights, I do better with a 6" bull. With a scope I can still use a 3" at 50 when shooting offhand, though, or even a red dot.

Bottom line is that there are no hard and fast rules. Experiment to see what works for you.

Sure like that first "sweet 16" group of targets. It would be a wall hanger here.
It would be cool to see another sixteen with no "X" bulls visible! With your shooting skill, RR, I think it's possible.

You always shoot well and no matter what target you have up. Hope you had a great time.

LikeI said, give shooting the 3" at 50 a try. Problem for me with the 3" at 50 with iron sights is that eye fatigue sets in pretty quick. My eyes aren't getting any younger.

Will give it a shot...pun intended.
