The closest range to me is a sheriffs range 35 miles away. I use it a couple of times a year for distance shooting, combat ranges, etc and spend the day there.

Most of the time, I set up my own range in a canyon 12 minutes away. My grandson is with me, so we took off for the day.

Perfect day in Arizona, 55 degrees, light breeze, blue skies.


I ran through my Henry 45 and 357, about 100 rounds each plus single actions on steel at 50 yards to ring in the new years.



I started my grandson in April on his Henry 22 youth and gave him a Wrangler for Xmas. We worked on manipulation, loading, downloading, square box shooting skills etc. This is only the second day he has shot his Wrangler and third time on his Henry.

When I was done with the 45, he asked if he could try one shot. Now this is a 9 year old young man. I warned him it may kick a little but he was game. I got him set up on the stable table and he applied all he had learned on his 22. Low and behold, he hit the steel ! One shot, one kill.

I told him that today we were going to have fun with the rifles, so no targets, hit the steel. He loaded his Henry, settled in, and don't you know he hit the steel at 50 yards on Iron sights 14 times out of 17 rounds ! ! ! He would reload and do it again.


As if that was not enough, he shot the 70 year old Remington Bolt 22 I was trained on as a lad, and did the same thing ! ! !

The old man could not have been prouder of the newest generation. Got it on video, but don't know hot to upload.

That is one fantastic day of shooting. Outstanding job with your son, dad. I'd be proud, too. Steel is the way to go to keep things interesting with both adults and kids. That's the shooting we do with the airguns when the grandkids come to visit. They love it.

You are a good grandpa...great shooting. Wish I was there, would love to ring some steel. Looks like a fun place to shoot. I love AZ, would move there if I could. Tombstone seems like a quiet little place....

Tombstone and Bisby are nice, and if you really research Tombstone, it has an incredible history starting as a silver mining town. There are over 300 miles of mines underneath tombstone, and an entrance to a mine in the basement of Big Nose Kates Saloon. OK Coral isn't what folks think, actually took place across form the stable in an empty lot that was only 18 feet wide !

Nice you could spend time with the Grandson. Im thinking of coming to the Tucson area in the future with the 5th wheel. Been there quite a few times as a child and adult. Both my Grandparents are buried there and lived on Olive Rd. I was curious and looking around for places to shoot. I see many ranges but here of people going out on the desert to shoot like you have.

OUTSTANDING .... truly outstanding .... building memories with your grandson that you'll both treasure for a long time to come

Closest I got so far was my chaps built by Wm Brown Holster in Tombstone....maybe some day take a drive down there.

That looks like a fine place to enjoy a lever rifle! We were out in Az. back in 2007 in Scottsdale area but did travel around surrounding areas...Flagstaff and traveled the Apachie Trail. Great shooting for you and your grandson too!

What a great story. You and your grandson will remember this day for a long time.

The desert is a great place to shoot, it's where we normally go, but today, went to a closer range in the mountains. I'll start a new thread on that here.

Well, had to return my grandson to his owners today. We had a great two weeks, really enjoyed working with his shooting skills.

Yesterday we went out and set up our range without targets. I put he steel at 50 yards and told him it was a fun shoot day. He was letting freedom ring with both his Henry 22 and the old Remington bolt action 22.

When done he asked if he could shoot his Ruger Wrangler 22. I asked if he thought he could hit the steel at 50 yards, with youthful exuberance he said "I think I can Grandpa"

Well, Ill be a monkeys uncle, but he walked the first six rounds towards the steel, reload, shot seven, miss, shot eight HIT, shot nine HIT ! ! !

He was shooting his Wrangler for the third time, never shot a pistol before, and was hitting the steel about 2 or 3 rounds out of six with a Wrangler 22, not the most precision firearm !!

Gotta say, must have been the outstanding coaching. I'm sure it had nothing to do with youthful steady hands and crisp eyesight, (and yes,he was using a Caldwell Stable Table and a shooting rest)

Great day to round out the holidays and sent him home boasting "I let Freedom Ring with my Wrangler" !
