582 Remington and Nikon

Post by bandit1250 » Thu Jun 02, 2016 8:16 am

Quite a while back I loaned a friend $50. I guess he never had the money to pay me back and I never asked for it. So yesterday I saw him and he asked if I would take his Nikon scope for what he owed me as he had sold the Savage rifle and kept the scope. I asked him how much I would owe him and he said two pawn shops offered him $30 for it so I didn't owe him anything and it has been to long getting me paid back. It is a 3-9X40 Pro Staff matte finish and is like new like most of his stuff usually is. So I got the Nikon and thought about putting it on the recently bought 270 or 30/06. I thought a good way to test it would be to try it on a rim fire to see how it tracked when moving the adjustments. I had a silver finish Nikon 4X on this rifle and never liked how it looked so figured this is a good one to put it on and give me a good excuse to get the silver one off. I put it on and set the parallax for 22 shooting and this scope works super. It works so well I may just leave it on the old Rem. It sighted in well and tracked good. Very positive clicks on the adjusters. I set the parallax at 50 and it is still good at 35 yds. on 6-7 power. I usually always hunt squirrel on 5X any way. Here is some groups I shot at 35yds.(Yard was drying up to shoot farther than 33yds. but here comes more rain)
This rifle I call "Old Ugly". Had a lot of gouges in the wood that I filled with body filler and painted it camo. Has patina on the metal and needed a firing pin and a mag tube follower when I bought it for $90. I had a firing pin and made a new follower from a piece of nylon. Looks better with the black scope.

The target from yesterday evening after the wind laid down. Top left is 8 shots the others are 5. It sure likes Tac but it don't get that in it often.

openly acknowledging there are several good scope manufactures to pick from .... that said, we only use Nikons .... we have 3X9's on several rifles that were installed in the 70's and are still dead on today .... our son's have 3X9's on their '70's Ruger 10-22's .... I've been working with our soon to be 8 year old grandson and he can consistently hit a skeet placed sideways on a stand at 50 yards with one of them .... your rig in the picture should serve you well

I rarely like any of the stock camo finishes offered on rifles, but "Old Ugly" is the exception. It would even look good in my gun cabinet!

And Old Ugly sure slapped those targets on the money....good shooting!
