My 1860 Henry, 45 Colt. BigAl, this one's for you...

As mentioned yesterday, I always really liked Winchester Super X 250 gr LFP factory ammunition. Took a box to the range today as I have not shot it for well over a year or more. Hard to compare to yesterday shooting my own reloads, as weather was different. No wind today at all. That makes a huge difference. However, it shot well and I still really like it.

50 yd work first, from 1 knee, open sights. Started off with 12 rounds...12" target re-used...






Next is some 50 yd pheasant hunting, 4 rounds on each card....binoculars to cheat again...




50 yds again, next I put the Joker on the board in a spot where there were not many bullet holes (so I could at least see the card...)....12 rounds at it, and some hits....Batman would approve...guess maybe 8 or 9 hits...






Last is at 100 yds, and getting better I think...like I said, the wind is my enemy out past 50 yds...12 on the target, 2 into the wood. shooting again from 1 knee which I hope I am able to do with my 1885 High Wall when I get it. Don't know, 30" barrel could be interesting but will sure give it a try.

Good to hear you still like that Win manufactured ammo, RR. And with either the Win or your reloads, I'd agree you're getting better. Happens when there is a lot of quality range time.

Plus you're focused on one rifle and one revolver only. They got to be like part of your hands, snugly fitting, just like when you hold those cards close! Good Range Report.

the Winchester factory ammo serves you well .... your ammo serves you equally well or better ... it also does so at considerably less cost ..

That is true.

Thanks for another great range report, RR. Still setting the bar higher than most of us will ever meet (we all know one or two others of those here that DO meet it).

For sure, ammo can make a difference, but, in the end, it's always the shooter. You've proven that one, many times, RR. Thanks for another inspiring range report.

I have put about 500 rounds downrange in last couple of weeks. Time to reload a bunch. I ordered more 250gr lead so I want to load some beefy'er rounds for the 1885 when it shows up. He originally said Sept so hoping to see it soon. He only brings shipments in 2 or 3 times a year.

I was thinking about the 2 range reports I posted from the 4th and 5th, and there is one difference that I did not consider. I focused on the ammo; reloads vs factory, and actually the factory was better between those two days. BUT....On the 4th I had the stock cover on my Henry. On the 5th I had taken it off. It's been on for awhile but I took it off just to check if the sun was doing anything to the color of the stock that's not covered vs what is covered. No difference but I am leaving it off because I actually prefer to pack cartridges in my belt. Anyhow, I had a better day shooting with it off the rifle, than I did with it on the rifle. I went back through some of my range reports and there seems to be a pattern of better results without a stock cover. Could it affect someone's shooting that much? Maybe. The crescent fits in tighter without the leather cover, maybe that makes a small difference in accuracy, or just comfort level while shooting which = accuracy. Interesting to think about, but not too long...

Here's is the belt I use....from Wild West Mercantile in Mesa AZ....a little detail on it but pretty basic, but I really like it. 2.5" width. Dark cherry oiled.

One thing I was wondering about, Are you saving the right side of the targets for something?

Ya I am working on that....the pull to the left is an issue.

So is this the question: "What component of controlling the trigger stroke is failing?" In the full movement of the rifle trigger, is there both the compression and the return which must be controlled? Most movement of the gun is generated by the interaction between the trigger and the trigger finger, so something must be out of kilter here.

RR, you said "I am working on that." How so? What are you doing, and what are you looking for? I know you mostly just love to shoot and are relaxed/content with that. But it sounds like you'd like to get your excellent off hand shooting results away from the left side of a target, and more consistently on the bull, right? It would be cool to do that, and I'd like to see it happen. At the same time, I'd like to myself learn what to do for such an improvement. I also often leave empty space on the right side of a target.

personally, his off hand groups are so consistent that I don't tend to believe there is much (if any) problem with his mechanics .... I suspect that what is needed is a tiny and I do mean tiny adjustment of the rear sight

Off to the range today with some of my reloads. Will see what happens. Watched a video on "rifle cant" recently, and how tilting either left or right, even the slightest affects trajectory....I suspect that might be the issue at times shooting off hand or from 1 knee.
