June 30th 1860, Splittin' the Ace

Post by RanchRoper » Sun Jun 30, 2019 2:10 pm

Gorgeous summer day out here on the northern plains. 65F, and just a nice breeze. Had the range all to myself as usual. Took my Henry 1860 in 45 Colt. Shooting my reloads of 250gr LRNFP and 6.7 gn of Universal. Been shooting lots of 200 gr lately, but today took some bigger hammers.
I bought a set of playing cards a few weeks ago, and taped some to a sheet of cardboard.

First up, some 50 yd work, shooting from 1 knee. Open sights as always. 26 rounds with all but one in the 4" ring. I have not cleaned my rifle in 3 outings so I was curious to see how accuracy would be but seemed ok.

Next I moved over to the 25 yd range to play some cards. First one is 25 yds, off hand standing. I don't shoot much standing up lately so I'm glad it was only 12 rounds cuz my arm was getting tired...the object was to not miss any cards...

And finally, shooting from 1 knee at 25 yds, with the Ace in the middle....12 rounds, it took me the 4th one in the middle to split it, not bad for 62 year old eyes at 25 yds. That 250gr flat lead did a number on that card.

And of course, my rifle

Hope you enjoyed playing cards with me, shoot safe.

No bluffs in that card game for sure. You "dealt" with those Winchester cards quite well! :)

The ones I shot today were some of my first reloads in April, they did shoot very well. Little recoil but wood shredders for sure.

RR, been trying that kneeling, but no way can I match what you're doing with that position. Very impressive. I think you're right about the kneeling position being used a lot, back in the old days, out on the prairie. As always, well done. Your posts are always such a visual treat, too.

Much appreciated folks. Leaned the targets up against the window to photograph them so the holes in the cards show up....maybe next time just tape them to the window and shoot them...you know, cut out the middle-man.

....somehow I think my wife may not approve of my ingenuity.

The 1-knee position is usually comfortable for me, except this week I twisted my right knee and having trouble with it. Hopefully nothing serious, but I am more Hoppy than Gene this week.

Excellent shooting Sir, shooting from one knee wouldn’t be a problem for me. Getting back up would be a different story.
Load on Sunday and Shoot all Week.......okay it's a Mare's Leg I will reload on Wednesday. ;)
