Nope, these old eyes don't ALWAYS need a scope. There's still some days when I can shoot irons and I hope there always will be. Anyway, hot and humid, yesterday, at the range, but no wind and plenty of sunshine, so good day to shoot iron sights and go traditional. Doesn't get more traditional than my Winchester 1885 Low Wall Classic in 22 LR single shot, which I decked out with a Marble's tang peep and a Lyman globe front.


In a lazy mood, just wanted to relax, so just put the Low Wall on the bag, fed it some match ammo in Eley subsonic HPs and went to work.

The right rifle, the right sights, the right ammo, the right conditions ... and a sub MOA group.


Not as good, but respectable on a lazy June day


Time to get that elevation, right. Fiddled around with the adjustment, but last shots where they needed to be.


And, of course, finished the day with my pal, my Uberti Cattleman 12 shot 22 LR.


I'm no cowboy action shooter, but I can shoot with some speed. Again, just relaxed, squeezing off a shot as soon as the sights fell back on target. Call it moderate plinking speed.



Lot more work to do with the Contenders, but always fun to step back in time and shoot the old-fashioned, traditional stuff. The cowgirl in me is still very much alive.

RR, you're going to love shooting any of these classic single shot rifles. There is something very distinctive and unique about working a falling block action, in particular.

JEBar, to be sure, every great outing with a particular gun just reinforces your trust in it. These kinds of summer sessions get me though our long hard winters that make getting out to shoot a real challenge.

None of my rifles have scopes and I enjoy whatever I can accomplish with them.
Love that 1885 Low Wall and if you want really laid back shooting just sit yourself in a comfortable chair and prop gun on knee!

Yuppers on the single shots for enjoyable shooting.

I had the most fun days past with my old trapdoor, seconded only by my reproduction rolling block.....only difference was caliber.

I bet you hate that 12 shot Uberti to dont ya. I cant get mine to shoot like that. But I bet you could. Ive thought about buying another one I like mine so much in the RR barrel length.

Have to admit, yeah, a 7 1/2 " barrel on these Colt 1873 clones would be an aid for target work. Those sights (and these old eyes) can use all the help they can get. The 5 1/2" barrel length on single action revolvers has always been my favorite, though, for balance and feel, dating all the way back to when I first started shooting with my old Single Six. Has a just right feel to me, even if not the best in terms of shooting accuracy.

On the other hand, no law that says I have to stick with just one of these guns ...

Great shooting as always NCG. You really have to go the the range and try this stuff for yourself to understand how difficult it is to pattern like this at these distances.

Thanks. For sure, you have to be a shooter and a bit of a shooting nut, at that, to measure groups down to a tenth of an inch or less. That's me, though.

NCG, you taught me how to shoot with irons, and I really appreciate. Interestingly, the two best shooters at our range are currently working on shooting 22 rifles with aperture sights at 100 yards. It’s pretty impressive to watch them.

Thanks, ditto. I love shooting my CZs with tangent sights at 100 yards, but I wait for just the right day when both my eyes and the shooting conditions are good. Can get pretty intense as to the concentration it takes, but now and then I pull off a real wall hanger.

Probably my best ever iron sight group and with open sights at that. Not sure I can ever repeat this one, but, of course, I still try. Just to give you an idea of much effort it takes, I spent over 30 minutes just to shoot 5 shots. Whenever something wasn't absolutely perfect, I would back off and wait. Did that at least a dozen times. I was exhausted, but elated at what I could do.

That's a wall hanger group, for sure. Nice shootin' is an understatement!
