I decided to remove the barrel mounted Skinner peep from my Golden Boy 22LR and go back to the factory buckhorn sight. Bottom line is I’m just more accurate with the buckhorn. It’s harder to pick up the front sight but when I do my shots are more accurate. I got it sighted in with a six o’clock hold on a nickel sized target at 15 yards. That translated to covering the bottom third of a 3” target at 30 yards. I was pleased with my results and I think I’ll leave well enough alone. Amazingly, I didn’t have to adjust the windage after installing the sight. I only had to adjust the rear sight insert slightly for elevation.

Good job. I like iron sights too.

Buckhorns are not 'inherently' bad - but some are much better than others.
The thicker the rear blade the better as it will channel light better than a thinner blade.
Also the sharpness of the cut of 'U' groove is important as well as how it relates to the shape of the front sight.
A 'V' groove rear will not sight well with a round bead front or will a blade front with 'U' rear.
Literally the best buckhorns I have are the stock T/C on my .54 caliber BP Renegade.
They are larger than typical buckhorns and the rear has very thick blade with a very sharp cut square 'groove' which aligns perfectly with the square front blade with just the right size gap around the perimeter.
I may try to find something similar for my 1899 mod 94 Winchester Klondike Sporting Rifle.

I do understand. As Mistered says, though, you can't lump all these sights, together. There are huge differences in performance and ease of use when it comes to open sights on rifles. In fact, I have a couple of CZ 22 rifles I bought specifically for the open sights and we shoot these rifles only with open sights. The sights are a pleasure to use. These guns will never see a scope. On the other hand, I've had open sights that were so tiny and hard to see, that I couldn't even use them on a cloudy day or in the shadows.

I also prefer the aesthetic look of buckhorns on levers. Just can't see them to use them.

Me too.

If you can see the small bead front sight with the stock Buckhorn you will be fairly accurate.
I found as my eyes get older I had to open up the rear sight a bit to pick up the bead. Helps to get some sunlight on that bead too.
From my shooting positions the sun is either to my left or later on in front of me.
