Well- I spent some time at the range today and one thing that I did was to test my Henry H010CC against my Marlin 1895 (Pre-Rem) I shot three round groups using both rifles at 50 and 100 yards. I also shot a three round 'open sight' group from my Henry 45 colt at the 50 yard target.
I will have to say that in every way I enjoyed shooting the Henry more, the trigger was a little better, my groups were a little better, and with the butt pad on the Henry, (and the weight of the octagon barrel), it was a little more comfortable to shoot.
If I had to pick one keeper of my two 45-70's I would pick the Henry in a heartbeat. (although I do like the Marlin loading gate)

Not bad at all for a big thumper like that. Factory or handloads? And, where'd you find those targets?

50 Yards were my plinker hand loads: 48 grains of 3031 with a Hornady 300 grain hollow point (the 45 colt was 16 grains of 2400 with a 250 grain hollow point)
100 Yards was my deer hunting load of 44 grains of H4198 with a Hornady 300 grain hollow point
The Range got pretty crowded by the end so I didn't get to compare the rifles with my full-house loads of 55.2 of 4895 behind a 350 grain flat point, (maybe another day!)

My dad gave me those targets for Christmas this year! They are pretty fun... Made by Birchwood Casey: They are called: 'Saloon Shootout'... $8.99 for an 8 pack on Amazon.

Nice shooting the groups seem to be very similar.
No 45-70's here, but do have an 1894 Cowboy in 45 colt.

Thanks for the info Greyhawk. I'm getting some of those targets. Heck, might frame a couple and put 'em in the house!

Great shooting and awesome targets, as noted! Two great looking rifles in those 45-70s, too! Henrys are pretty easy to like.

I couldn't shoot something like that (45-70); would have to do it by proxy

Was just thinking, "What if you tried a friend's new Marlin and liked it better than the JM (not as much as the Henry, or course )?

But such discussion is foolish, as we know that is not scientifically possible

Aint nothin wrong with a 444 they are great to. I had one and sold it like a dummie.

I’m curious why you shoot expensive jacketed bullets with that big a charge for plinking.... have you tried cast lead with Trail Boss? I am a big fan of TB for just farting around, so to speak. I even use it in my .SP101 .327 with cheap 100 gr cowboy bullets for plinking.

You can get .458” bulk bullets for about $0.20 each. The Hornadys are what, about $0.50? These are super cheap and very accurate at low velocities (1400 fps max).

wherever possible we try to practice with the ammo we hunt with .... in addition we have tried lead bullets .... fully realizing I'm in a minority, we no longer choose to do so .... they worked but bottom line, we weren't satisfied with their performance .... we've learned that it is often possible to fire jacketed ammo at a reasonable cost .... a couple of examples below :

Have no opinion on Marlin rifles.
Since I spent the funds I had on Henrys and since I don't need anymore firearms it's doubtful I would buy a Marlin.

I like to plink with the same bullets and loads that I hunt with... I have a ton of Hornady bullets to burn up too...But, I am going to try the ballistic silvertips someday though. (Also, I don't pay for my reloading stuff, I use my Cabela's points )

Im tired of lead bullets for the most part. I just dont want to use them anymore. I use copper plated for plinking. Sure there cheaper but not that much cheaper than copper plated and the plated and jacketed bullets are just a whole lot cleaner. I use 16 grains of Universal Clays and a Berrys 350 gr plated for plinking.
